Topic: Day/Night issues... at 7 months! Posted: 21 December 2009 at 5:18am |
As a newborn it was a bit of an issue teaching Day from Night for DD. Since then we have had to reteach her again and again.
Every time she has a growth spirt she picks up extra feeds at night, and then wants to lose one during the day and keep the extra night one. Also I find that any new milestone (or even illness) is usually met with at least one sleepless night, then we seem to end up back at square one with her wanting to be up all night and sleep all day.
Anyone else had issues with this? Does it resolve itself, or am I destined to always have a night owl?

7 months is still very young and personally I wouldn't expect any baby of that age to sleep through consistently without a night feed. If it happens then you should consider yourself lucky!
DD is nearly 9mths and still wakes, sometimes wanting 2-3 feeds per night although she can and does sleep through for 12 hours other nights (sometimes sleeping through for weeks at a time, then suddenly starts waking again).
I have just learnt to go with the flow, after all it is only for a very short time in the big scheme of things

Thanks, yeah I realise that night feeds are not uncommon at this age, and this is not the problem. We too go through stages of 12 hours sleep, but more often than not she still needs a feed at night (she is only 6kg too, so I am more than happy with this).
The problem is that she seems to prefer to be up ALL night, with just naps and to sleep all day. I seem to be constantly having to retrain her that sleep is for night. If she had her way she would only feed once or twice during the day and have the rest of the feds at night.

Ah I apologise! That is a hard one. Not one that I have personally experienced. I think if I were in your position, I would try to keep her up as much as possible during the day. Is she on solids yet? Is she in some sort of routine? Maybe giving her more sturcture (which I'm sure you've already tried!)
Oh sorry, that is a hard one. All I can say is that she will probably grow out of it soon enough and before you know it she'll have started something else that confuses the heck outa you!
P.S hope you get some sleep soon!

I am probably of no help but I always sleep my kids with the curtains open etc during the day so they know its day and then close them etc at night. Not sure if you have tried that or night.
Also a bed time and morning time routine that you are consistent with might help and perhaps starting the day at the same time each day.
E.g wake a 7am, breakfast, a certain play actitivy that is only done in the morning, change into day clothes.
Night - dinner, bath, change into pjs, feed, book, bed and song.

At 7 months she should just be having two day naps, so I'd just allow her only to have two naps, no longer than 2 hours (shorter if possible) and feed her at least every 3 hours so she has most if not all her daily requirement during the day, and hope she gets the idea. Not sure how much help that is ... but good luck!

Thanks for your advice and support Ladies.
We have a fixed routine for bedtime and morning and her feeds are fairly fixed through the day, but her day sleeps are all over the place as they have to fit around her brothers hectic schedule I think that she would really thrive with a fixed schedule, but unfortunately it is just not possible. She has blinds in her room, not curtains, so her bedroom is very light for her day sleeps When everything is "on track" she only sleeps about 2-3 hours during the day - so not excessive, but still we get the bad nights creaping in. She feeds 4 hourly during the day - any more frequently and we get issues with her reflux.
We are also battling reflux, eczema, FTT, food allergies and adverse reactions to almost every solid I introduce - so don't know if that is related at all.
Arrgghh - it all does my head in!!!

Poor you that sounds like a hard one! You have probably tired this, but I feed with a only a little torch for light during the night, she seems to know when its not playtime. Good luck.

Thanks for your support ladies!
Still not great here. She has just learned to crawl and can't seem to 'turn it off' when she goes to sleep! DH is on holiday from tomorrow and I have asked him for a week in bed for my Xmas pressie - probably wishful thinking, but I think he has got the idea...
