I can't find anything online in terms of food safety rules regarding eating deli counter olives. I've been eating them quite regularly, they're one of my cravings. Because they're so salty I assume the salt keeps all the bacteria and nasties at bay.

Opinions? Also, anyone know of any good jarred olives? I've tried lots of varying prices but none are as good as the deli ones.

I wouldn't eat delli olives because they are exposed to the air, and you dont know if they are being stored properly or if they have been handled properly.

However, I have been eating jars of olives. I LOVE them.

I personally wouldn't eat deli anything, you don't know how they are stored or handled. I've seen plenty of deli, ice cream bars etc, where the servers hands come into contact with the food (I've even seen one person lick the icecream off the back of their hand before going in for another scoop!), and that would be what would really put me off. Even if you don't see it, it is possible.

Pretty sure general rule of thumb is to avoid anything from a deli. Jar olives are fine though.

I agree, the general consensus is no deli food because it can easily be contaminated. Sorry but I would recommend not eating them!

My ob said nothing from the deli counter. If you want olives or any deli product you should get them from bottles or air sealed packages.
