Did I over react and expected too much from a 23 year old?
Ok well I have my 23-year-old sister and her BF from the states staying with us. Mike, the girls and I went out this afternoon partly because they were doing my head in! I knew we were going to be home a little late so I pre made a salad and lasagne so all I had to do was reheat it. Any who it got to 5.30 and we were still out (in Auckland) so I phoned her and said we will be home bout 6.30 no later and could she please but the lasagne in the over to reheat, feed the cats and give the dog his bone.
Well when we got home I walked in the door dead on 6.30 with 2 screaming, hungry babies expecting that at least I wouldn’t have to do dinner, their they were watching a DVD eating pizza, dinner still in the fridge, no animals feed, well that was it I snapped big time!
My question is did I over react and expect too much? Personally I don’t see what’s so hard about what I asked and I even rang before hand.
Oh and Mike thinks I did

Nope I don't think you did - 23 is not 14!! How hard is it to put dinner in the oven? (not sure about animal feeding coz if it'd been me not sure I would've done that part I'm so not an animal person)

I think if they were in your house and you asked them to do that, she could have at least said on the phone if it was a problem. You might have asked too much (I think I would have asked her to heat the lasagne) but the fact that you asked and she presumably didn't say no or that she couldn't - and then didn't - is a bit immature.
And maybe the way you reacted probably had a lot more to do with the babies crying than your sister failing expectations?

Yeah it is a bit rude not heating it when you asked her to. Feeding the animals though, maybe not something I'd expect a visitor to do.. but if someone rang and asked I would do it.
She probably just got caught up in watching the movie and forgot to do it..not having kids herself she might not have realised how exhausted you would have been.

Just wanted to point out that it's not the age but the fact that she doesn't have kids and responsibilities like we do.. I'm 23

Nope I would have been pissed too! I guess the animals could have waited but it only takes a minute to turn an oven on and chuck something in there to heat up!

Your sister and mine sound like soulmates Gwen, I look at my sister and can't believe that I had Maya by the time I was her age, she is so irresponsible!
So no, I don't think you over reacted. I'm assuming you are feeding her etc. while she stays with you. I wouldn't feel bad asking any house guest to do a thing or two to help out (esp. when you have twins!) but when the house guest is family you shouldn't even have to ask!

Yep I agree, that was rude. It definately wasnt expecting to much at all. But also have to agree that she probably has no clue at all about how exhausted you would be from having a day out with 2 babies, and hopw mush planning you had to do just to make the day run smoothly!
Now I have a baby, I realise I could have been a lot more helpful and supportive to my friends that had kids before me, I just really had no clue what it was like.

No I don't think you expected too much.
When I was 23 there was only one person my life revolved around and that was me.
I suspect your sister took the call, hung up and went back to her DVD and forgot all about it.
Its probably good that you snapped at her, might make her think next time.

Wow, I'm 23 and I would never do something like that. I don't think you expected too much of her at all.
In my opinion, if you are staying at someones house, be it your sisters hours or someone elses house, you respect their place, respect their things and help out as much as you can.

Nope not at all, its not like you asked her to move the earth for you. It was a simple thing to do that at that age could of easily been done.

I was just going to say it when someone else did, but hello, for them to not only not heat the dinner, but then go and get themselves pizza.. that really is the height of rudeness. I would have gone off too.

I think you had every right to snap at them!

yeah, it'd be the ordering in pizza instead of just putting the lasagne for everyone in the over that would have made me the most angry. I don't really get why you'd stay at your sister's house with her little new twin babies, and not expect to help out. Even without the babies in the picture - I'd still expect to pull my own weight about the place!
