Topic: Doggy people - advice please! Posted: 14 December 2009 at 12:54pm |
So I was walking my dog the other day, and a guy on the side of the road asked if I knew anything about two strays wandering the street. One was a black and white pitbull, the other a caramello guy dog/pointer type dog. His own dog was behind a fence.
These two dogs had been out before on my road. They were registered and we tracked down the owner, who advised that they were safe dogs, and he was doing what he could to keep them within his property.
As I was starting to tell this to the guy, the pitbull first lunged at Duncan, and then at me. Duncan has a bite scar on his hip. The nipped at me, but I have no injury. It seemed to take forever, I've never been so panicy in my life.
Thank God that guy was there. Once he made the decision to get inbetween me, my dog and the pitbull, he did so assertively and I believe he saved us from any further harm. I got as far away as possible as quickly as possible, he called the pound.
I have never been afraid of dogs in my life, now I can't go near a labradoor, jump at a chi, & was incredibly nervy around Dad's boxer. This so isn't me. Today Duncan is having a play date at my house with a huntaway cross, and they seem to be really enjoying it. My hearts still racing, and the dogs are here all day. Maybe I'll relax soon.
We're contenplating getting a second mini. There is a 3yr old fixed well socialised male in our area who is up for sale at the moment. Dogs are pack animals - would a stray be less likely to attack if I have two in my hands? Would it be fairer on my dog, who gets walked nearly daily for an hour anyway, when another child came along? What issues does a second dog help, what does it hinder? Or am I being selfish? We have a fully fenced yard, an even bigger fully fenced area to run in right next door, and can afford the food and rego costs etc. We probably can't afford to insure another animal though.
Any thoughts, ideas and opinions appreciated, while I try and 'nut out' my current dog situation.

First thing you need to do is report the dog owner for having a dog that bit Duncan. Thats just not on! If he was doing everything he could to stop them leaving his property they'd be tied up or caged or inside. NO excuse.
As a owner of multiple dogs, i'd go mental if another dog was wandering around possibly biting other people/other dogs! This happened to a friend of mine in the bay of islands and the poor wee doggie was lucky to be alive after being attacked by a wandering pack of pitbulls. The same dogs attacked and killed a lady in the same town (in Kaikohe if anyone remembers)
Dont let these rogue dogs put you off of extending your fluffy family - the quicker they're off the street, the quicker everyone else will be safe again! I hope your jumpiness towards other dogs go away soon - 99% of doggies are loving animals and wouldnt attack for no reason, its only a select few that ruin it for everyone else! kinda like boy racers :P
But yea, get onto getting that guy sorted out! Best of luck to you!
oh, you dont live in Rangiora do you? I saw 2 dogs similar out for a trot by themselves yesterday.

Hiya, sorry to hear about the dog attack, that does sound scary!
We just recently got a second dog. We have a 3 year old lab and got a cocker spaniel puppy who we have had for 4 months now so they have passed the settling in phase. We got a second dog largely to keep our lab company as she is by herself for few hours a day and she really enjoys dog company.
To be honest I don't think our lab is happier/unhappier with the 2nd dog, I think it gives her more to do and think about during the day other than just snoozing but often the puppy annoys her. Also the puppy has become the dominant one in the "pack" so I feel a bit sorry for the lab but I am told that dogs work these things out for themselves and there is no point stepping in.
In terms of how it affects us it is certainly not as relaxing as it used to be at home. Having one dog means they are normally just lying around sleeping, having two (esp a puppy) means that they are often playing and making a lot of noise when you would rather they were sleeping. Of course there are the extra costs but you know that going in. As much as it is extra work I'm glad we did it because it is heaps of fun. Getting an adult dog would be a lot easier than a puppy anyway, and I think it would be nice for your dog to hang out with a friend as your family expands, that was certainly in the back of our minds as well.
Your question on whether or not a stray would be less likely to attack having two....I would say no. It really all depends on which dog is most dominant in the situation. Two dogs are a real handful to walk together as well!

One of the reasons that pitbull attacked your dog is probably cause your dog was on a lead. When a dog is on a lead they are in a very vulnerable position and the other dog roaming would've picked up on this.................learnt this at Dog obedience classes.
But yeah I agree with Angel if that owner was doing everything he could that dog would not be out and about full stop and imagine if that was your daughter that dog attacked and not your dog so he definately needs to be reported.
Unfortunately once those sort of dogs start attacking things they do get a taste for it and can end up vicious dogs and thats when problems start.
I'm a dog lover but dogs like that do need to be dealt with as they are a danger to everyone and everything when they get out of hand...........as a dog breeder told me they kinda go crazy in the brain which makes them fight and stuff so sometimes its kinder to put them down.

The dogs have been reported, and are currently in the pound, unless of course the fees have been paid by the owner.

My mum was a dog breeder, and she always maintained two dogs weren't any more trouble than one and we had up to 10 at any given time. They were dacshunds though so don't take up much room.
She sold a number of pups to people with existing dogs and they got on fine, I remember she sold one to a couple with a lab and the dachy did become top dog, more to do with the docile nature of labs I suspect.

Another dog lover here. 2 dogs might be even more exciting for the other dogs to attack. BUT those dogs need to be taken off the street and your choices should not be made on the basis of some other prat's animals. I don't like even friendly dogs wandering around unrestrained (unless at a doggie park where the presumption is the owner has them under some sort of control). I hate the presumption that just because you have dogs and like dogs that other people should have to put up with them. But, now that they've shown aggression and "dominated" you I would be really worried about further aggression. No doubt in my mind - report them every single time you see them wandering around. They're downright scary.
My current dog likes being an only dog, but not all dogs are like that and mostly all of my other animals have been in 2's or 3's without much fuss. But I also reckon 2 dogs is more than double the bundle of energy and mess of 1. But I've always got rescue dogs from the SPCA and you can find one personality wise to fit your existing family. Everyone wants a puppy but there are real advantages to getting a slightly older dog, even if it's just an older puppy.

I've been walking my dog before and had a stray dog come up and try to attack my dog, the whole territory thing, I rung up dog control and they found the dog, its owner etc and sorted it out. Even if the dog doesn't attack you/your dog, you still need to report it in case it attacks someone else. They also keep a record of how many times dogs "escape" even if they're registered as there may be fencing issues and things like that.
In relation to your question, having another dog won't necessarily stop a stray attacking, your dog might not like suddenly having another dog to share the house with... We've always had more than one dog, currently we have 3, 2 of them are male and both want to be "top dog" which can cause issues of fighting from time to time... Having more than one dog can be a pain when walking, esp if they are big dogs and pull on the lead! They can also bark for attention too I've found. Don't know if that helps you in anyway but hope it does!
