Topic: EBM...Help now please Posted: 22 February 2009 at 9:02pm |
Hope that got your attention
I got out one of my bottles of EBM today for DH to use just incase this arvo.
How do you normally heat it up? I've got the jug on so I can just pop it the bottle in the boiling water. How long does it take to get to the right temp, just ball park time.
I know some use the microwave but that can destroy nutrients, I think?

Don't use the microwave. I think I would put it in hot but not boiling water for about 20 minutes, but would shake it every 4 min or so.
I think.

I used to heat up EBM all the time by plopping it into water that had boiled in the jug a few minutes before (so it had cooled a bit).
Only took 4 or 5 mins.

How much is in the bottle? If it is boiling water it would take approx 5mins for about 100-150mls but like Flissty said make sure you keep shaking it so it heats evenly and then don't forget to check the temp before you give it to him. I would be inclined to let the boiling water to cool a little first before putting the bottle in to prevent overheating it, unless of course you need it in a hurry!

Yeah it didn't take that long & it's only a 125ml bottle.
Now the next Q!
If they don't drink it all, I guess you have to hiff it....
We woke him, 4 hours since last feed, he took 30ml & fell back to sleep.
Good thing is at least he didn't refuse it!

Yep need to chuck it. You can keep defrosted EBM in the fridge for 24hrs though.

You definately have to chuck it after the feed but did you know that you can reheat the EMB during the feed, just keep a jug of hot water beside you and as it cools pop it back in for a min or so.

What I tend to do is start with a smaller amount, say 60-80ml then if she drinks all that, offer another small amount. There's less waste that way.

So defrost it & separate it into two smaller amounts & only heat one at a time?

yes liquid gold Marisa, felt temped to give it to the dog but sighed and poured it down the drain
