Please excuse my ignorance.

Do i get the money exchanged here or there when i go to Australia?

How does duty free work? Do I buy it here, if i buy here do i take it over there and then bring it back, and get more over there and bring that back too? A workmate wants me to get her smokes.

You can go to your bank and get some exchanged, or even at the airport.. wherever suits you really..

You can buy some on the way out, which you pick up when you depart the plane in Oz, and/or you can buy some on the way out of Oz which you pick up when you depart the plane in NZ. So if you don't want to have to lug their stuff around just get it on the way back. Just remember to pick it up before you come out of the point of no return haha

Oh, and obviously you have to be aware of limits if you plan to buy both ways..

Shop around the banks! They all pay slightly differently, and some charge more than others for the exchange.

Going into OZ you can take 200 smokes or 250grms of tobacco and a fewbottles of alcohol. Coming back to NZ you can bring 3 1125ml bottles 250 smokes or 250grms of tobacco. Be careful if you are taking smokes over and then getting more on your way back open the packet of the ones you take over. Also just come back from there by your DF in NZ heaps cheaper.

Is that tailormades Becks? Do you know what the 5x 50gms cost?

How much would you want to take over for spending money for a 7 day holiday? I don't have to pay for accommodation or travel

Don't change your money at the airport they normally sting you a little, best to do it at a bank beforehand.

Enjoy your holiday...EXCITING!!!

Iv just looked at most of the banks and at the moment it looks like Westpac is the best.

Do you know how eftpos cards from NZ work over there? Im worried about taking heaps of cash!

The banks sting you for using your card overseas and I am 99% sure you can only do cash withdrawals from an ATM. Even when you use your VISA etc. they sting you as well!

I always worry about taking lots of cash too, but I have always made sure it is on me at all times. Depending on how much you are taking travellers cheques maybe an option.

Yep I am a Horizon's girl and that price was for 200 tailers.

I think 250 tobacco is $37I think I am sorry I didn't look at that as I didn't want that.

Get a VISA debt and take cash over with you. That way you have cash when you need it and you can use your own money with the visa debt card.

If you know any flight crew, they don't have to pay to exchange money...perhaps if you do know someone they could do it for you. DH said to tell you the commission is cheaper to exchange it here than oz, he travels to & from oz probably 5 times each week . If you use your VISA in Oz, you get charged an extra 1%, so its not too bad.

Eta - oops the Visa service fee is 1-1.5% in most places :-)
