Topic: Excited or scared?? Posted: 26 April 2006 at 4:43pm |
Hey how many of you are scared about labour??? Funnily enough this is my first baby and Im not really that scared.Im quite excited to be honest. I see and hear bad labour stories but it doesnt put me off. Am I weird??, lol!!
Some ladies say you should have an epidural and Im like since its my first if possible I would really like to experience a natural birth so I know how it feels. If it is really bad then next ime around I might opt for an alternative,
Are you scared, anxious, excited???

Hi
Im excited mainly. But at our antinatal classes we just did the labour and pain relief etc and I am actually quite scared too, althought Im trying not to dwell on it. I dont think I'm a wimp - but I am scared that I wont be able to cope with the pain, but mostly Im scared that something could go wrong, there seems to be a lot that can.
I would rather go without drugs but as this is my first time I'm going to keep my options open.

i looked at it like - its only one bad day out of my year - and thats all it was! so glad you seem to have a positive frame of mind about this. I recently got a tattoo done, and he gave me some advice that applies here - the more you tense up, the more it hurts. my midwife made me constantly wiggle my fingers so i couldnt clench my fists. its all about staying as relaxed as possible.

just because you have an epidural doesnt mean its not a natural birth and you still feel pain thats for sure. I was very anti epidural before hand but ended up with one and loved it. You have no idea what its like so wouldnt rule anything out at this stage.

I wouldn't say I'm scared as I'm REALLY trying not to think about it, no point dwelling on it I reckon! I'm leaving my pain relief options totally open as I don't know what my pain threshold is (I've never even twisted an ankle, let alone pushed a watermelon out of a lemon sized hole! LOL) so my midwife and I have an understanding that as long as there are ALL pain relief options available, we'll see how I go when the time comes.

I'm excited as!! I'm scared witless of needing an episiotomy or c-section, though, and chicken about the idea of a needle going near my spinal cord, forceps, or the need for any stitches. I'm worried about how physically exhausting it'll be, but that's more because of a pre-existing health prob than anything else. I'm aiming to go drug-free, but will keep my options open for the day - who knows what I'll think at the time? Hmmm... that all sounded mostly negative - really I'm excited to meet our baby face-to-face and can't wait to feed it.

Excited and impatient really ! The main thing is that this baby has to come out somehow, and I can't wait to meet her

Um, heres the thing with an epi. You won't feel the needle going in, and if you have a good birth team, you won't even be aloud to look. Basically you will be in too much pain to feel it anyhow!!!
I'm with Robyn, just because you have an epi, dosen't mean it isn't natural. You don't get a medal for not having one!!
At the end of the day, yes, it is only one day, and baby has to come out!! The more you fight it, the more it hurts. You will TOTALLY forget the pain pretty quickly! Good luck! It is soooooo normal to be feeling excited/nervous/anxious. Me, i'm feeling jealous!!

me too!
i was excited and impatient up to my daughters birth, then when it was happening i was scared sh*tless....it does hurt a tad (ha bloody ha) but also what freaked me out was how i wasnt in control of my body...its not a nice sensation, and i didnt realise contractions do that-eg come whether u want them to or not,so if i can be of any help its just to say be prepared to have no control over contractions and it is normal....and concurring (love that word...if it is one) with what others have said dont rule out pain relief...labour really is a different kind of pain to anything u would have felt before and there is no such thing as failing at birth,as long as baby comes out, weve done our job.
But its great ur excited, as Lu (james) said theres nothing better than a positive mind frame

I was really excited about my c-section(this will be my 3rd)until a few weeks ago,and now I am so scared dunno why exactly.Just remembering the afterpains etc and then I start thinking about "what if I have another screaming baby'?My last had reflux and I got PND.I know all this thought will be gone from my mind when I see my little boy but gosh its scary at the moment 25 days to go for me and then it will all the good parts of being a mum will come rushing back.

I'm definitely scared of the pain involved, but not so much about things going wrong. A friend of mine gave birth recently and she had a really bad long labour which ended in a c-section, and even though her description was really graphic I don't feel it put me off.

I was terrified until my waters broke!!! Then I realised it had to happen and I went with it... I ended up having the most fantastic birth and I really think relaxing helped! Good luck girls, it's not as bad as you think (well, in my experience anyway...)

I'm not so worried this time round as I have a strong feeling I will end up having a c-sect. With Maya I was more worried that something would go wrong than the actual pain.
But I actually didn't find labour and birth all that bad. Sure, it hurt and I wouldn't want to do it every day, but it was bearable and the actual birth was so quick I barely had time to think about how much it hurt.

Last time I was scared because of the unknown, I remember constantly questioning my friend as to how it would feel and what happens. Now its like oh man I have to do that again even though I know its no where near as bad as i thought it woudl be and after the epi I actually enjoyed the birth its still the thought of all the gross little details Im not looking forward to.

I was scared sh**less for years about the thought of labour.
And being that the boys ended up coming early by 9 weeks I was more terrified - of things going wrong and the pain etc. Also didnt get the chance to go to antenatal classes as they started the day after the boys were born!!!
Had to ambulance from Taihape to palmy and was scared i was going to have them in the ambo.
Told specialist had to have drugs but was too late for them.
The funny thing was that once I had Keegan I chilled out heaps and coped better with Jaidyns birth (43minutes later)
Although I do remeber the doc telling me he needed me to help push the palcenta out - I promptly asked him didnt he think I had push enuf out of me that night already lol
Im glad i got to have a natural birth as I had been told by my specialist that I would prob have a c-section which at the tme suited me!!
Also my recovery was really quick - I was up out of bed once the drip had finished ( about an hour after had jaidyn) and felt really good.
