    Posted: 30 July 2009 at 4:17pm

For the last few weeks my poor girl has been extremely constipated. only managing to go maybe once or twice a week if she's lucky. Except when she does go it obviously causes her extreme pain. She goes red in the face starts crying frantically and I have to hold her legs in the air just so she can push it out otherwise she clenches her bottom together so it can't come out. The end result usually resembling something more like dog poop meaning very hard and much too large to be coming out of a baby's bum! I thought it may have been her diet as she is starting to eat more solids now so I cut out all meats and have been giving her prunes, gripe water and boiled water every day as well but nothing has changed. Is there some other remedy or should I maybe just take her to the doctor? I have been rubbing her tummy every day too which helps a bit but it still really hurts her when she does manage to go.

Is she on formula or breastfed? and have you recently introduced dairy?

My boy got extremely constipated when first weaned onto formula and it turned out he is actually allergic to dairy. He got so bad that the doc prescribed an enema for me to have to do at home, believe me that was not a pleasant experience for either of us. We also were told to give lactulose (you can buy from the pharmacy for a few dollars) it is better than giving brown sugar in water etc as it's a non soluble sugar and holds water in the gut which then helps with the pooing, but it's not a long term solution it's just to help till you find out the cause.

A trip to the doc probably wouldnt' hurt to discuss it and then you can also get the lactulose on script for free.

I think there is something available from the chemist called lactulose. But failing that definitely go to the doctor. Actually, you can possibly get it on script?

I would take her to the doc. My nephew has suffered from terrible constipation for 2 years and her doc has given her this stuff she puts in his milo each night and it helps him out.

As far as natural remedies we give the girls prune juice or apple juice. Heaps of water during the day can help. Lots of fruit like pears and apples (bananas can make the constipation worse) I wouldn't cut the meat out of her diet as your then taking away a great source of iron. What kind of bread does she eat? I was told you only give babies white bread but I went to the doc when the girls were around 6 or 7 months old because they had constipation and he told me to try giving them wholegrain bread instead so now thats all they get. We also give them wholegrain pasta occasionally for dinner. You can also get jars of baby food that have prunes in them.

Hope Shes better soon

Yeah I'm thinking a trip to the doc wouldn't hurt. I will definitely ask about the lactulose if it means saving a few dollars :) Chemists can be so expensive.

She is still breastfeeding as well. I think I read online somewhere that breastfed babies can have trouble with digesting solids as their tummies aren't used to digesting anything harder unlike formula fed babies.

My oldest was on formula and she never had constipation but unfortunately my youngest still won't take a bottle. On the plus side she doesn't like dummies either.. She thinks its a toy lol.

Sorry I'm a bit slow at reading peoples posts lol. She only has white bread. I try to give her lots of fluids but since she doesn't like the bottle I have to try her on the sipper cup but she still struggles a bit as she doesn't get a constant flow and she has to keep stopping for air lol. I usually make her dinner from whatever's available at home since the tin foods didn't fill her up as much but I think I'll have a look for the one with prunes in it.

the Watties 'Apple & Prunes' worked a treat for Sophie. She was terrible for ages, but not as bad as your wee girl (poor poppet - it sounds so sore ). Some times I just fed it to her and then once she started to have baby breakfast cereal I always mixed in half a jar of 'Apple & Prunes' .

But as the others have said, a trip to the doc would be wise.

Oh, and welcome to OB .

Coloxyl and senna are pretty good, but I am not sure if babies can have it...?

This site may also help:

Snap specialK - was going to say Coloxyl - and yip they can have it - you can get it at the chemist.

Was told it is better than Lactulose as you have to make sure they have heaps of water with latculose.

Otherwise there is also have been told brown sugar in water works well (just a very small amount of brown sugar - enough to colour the water) also when my DD was bunged up we would boil up some prunes in water and give her the water.

The other thing I used to do is add a few prunes to her solids when I was making them (used to chuck them into the pot then whizz them up with the veges), or add some fruit before whizzing them.

Also banana's and Apples can bung them up (I didn't realise apples had that effect until I was told when DD was starting on solids)

Ditto to everything in the above post. We have a wee problem with getting bunged up and either a bit of prune water or the watties apple and prunes gets results everytime
