    Posted: 23 May 2011 at 9:36am
A friend of mine pointed me to this blog and asked me what I thought about doing family cloth.

I reckon its a good idea, but would only use it for pee and not #2. Although I do use cloth wipes on DD so there is not really any difference except social perception on my part.

Would you do it? If not why?

Well, it kind of makes sense. I don't find it too gross... although you'd want to wash a lot, the bin doesn't look nice and sealed like a nappy bucket. In saying that, I don't think I'm going to rush out to try it.

In theory I think its a great idea but to be honest I don't think I would do it. I'm too lazy to have to think about yet another load of wahsing   And also even though I don't find it 'gross' I do have trouble getting my head around the idea but don't really know why.(IYKWIM)

No I would not use it. If using only for #1 then it would only be me as my house is full of boys. No way would I want to wash them when AF is around

I don't get how you would dump them straight into the wash from a bucket, surly with a cloth nappy you would clean off any poo before putting it in the washing machine...don't want poo floating around in my washing machine.

I would rather cut up news paper & use that...

It doesn't gross me out at all, but I'm far too lazy to do it. I already have enough washing to deal with on a daily basis as it is

I'd do it if it were already set up for me! The "having to wash it" bit doesn't gross me out at all, as we already use MCNs, cloth wipes and mama cloth pads!

ditto on the MCNs, cloth wipes and mama pads hehe although it doesn't gross me out rinsing poo off cloth wipes for my kids, don't think I could do that for myself, and definitely not for DH LOL so would just be for #1s if we did it.

You're pooing into the toilet Rach, so there'd be minimal poo on the wipes in the end ;) Though still a good idea to start with wees if you're weary, you'd still save heaps of loo paper I reckon!

I don't see how you will save $, you have to wash them & dry them so that vs a couple of buck does not seam worth it.

I wonder how much it cost for toilet paper a yr

Toilet paper's damn expensive! I buy the cheapo stuff, and don't enjoy buying it (I joked once to DH that we'd just have to save it up and go at work ). Still an expense I'm willing to pay, though!!

Don't think I could do it! Although I use cloth nappies. I could possibly do it for #1s but probably not #2s I can't get my head round it.

As for the poo floating round the washing machine when your machine is going through a rinse and spin cycle anything that is in there gets spun/pumped out so there isn't actually anything in there. I do rinse DD's nappies if she poos but sometimes you just can't get it all off without scrubbing and I don't have the time to scrub her nappy while she's yelling at me and pulling on my legs, plus its slightly awkward with the way the laundry is set up. A hot wash every now and again (which incidently you should do anyway to break down the fabric softener and soap scum build up) and your machine is clean.

You would probably save a bit on TP in a full house how long does a roll of toilet paper last where as cloth wipes last years and years and years and probably cost only a couple of dollars more then that roll

I would, convincing dh would be another thing. It would save us money as we already use cloth wipes for the kids so no extra washing I'd just put them in with the nappies .

For us we use a pack of 18 rolls per month so I think it's about $6-7 dollars. Pack, not much saving but every little bit counts.

Is it just the thought of rinsing poo that would stop people ? You could do a pre wash rinse first if that's the case.

Yeah I would wash them with the nappies too so wouldn't be extra washing. Would definitely rinse poo off first as I do that with the nappies anyway.

Think we will look into it. Not sure what DH would think but he has no problems rinsing/washing nappies so doubt he'd be too grossed out. I made all new wipes for DS so still have all the ones from DD in the cupboard that we could use as a trial. Would need to get a sealed bucket though so DD doesn't play with it and maybe a separate container for DH so he can rinse his own hope that's not TMI lol. Anyone else going to try it?

Agreed.

Its not that much & you can get the real budget ones so it has to be cheaper than cutting up squares, washing them & drying them....then folding them in a old box...

ewww, may as well go back to using your hand than have re-usable loo roll. I'd rather use bidet than re-usable paper.
Dealing with Dd's sh*t is bad enough why would I want to contend with my own or Dh's for that matter.

I find it revolting.

pudgy I don't like the idea. I have 3 kids & have been wiping butt for 10yrs. I worked in a daycare & we used cut up cloths to wipe butts & threw them away after.

Something I don't think should be recycled to me this & tea bags should be on the no recycle list.

Don't you think it is a bit degrading for your DH to have his poo washed off a rag so the rag can be reused for someone else to wipe their butt?

I don't want to wash cloths from visitors toilet trips either...what if 1 had her AF how embarrassing for her & me.

For me it would mean a wash for them only.
