I am careful about what I have. I haven't even had panadol and I quit smoking too. I guess it just sounded like people were thinking I was sitting her boozing it up and that's just not the way it is. I picked a girl friend up from the pub a while ago and there was a heavily pregnant woman there with two vodka premixes in her hand and smoking a ciggy. I think the odd small glass is ok but that is way past the line in imho. |
as everyone has said it's totally a personal thing....but if you quit smoking and didn't have panadol then I would have thought you wouldn't drink either? for me....everything gets passed onto the baby and I'm someone who didn't touch it either.... but as I said before it's totally a personal thing but as the research isnt clear as to when the alcohol affects the baby and there are cases of not having much and it causing FAS so I didn't think it was worth the risk.

I still drunk v i just cut back from 2 or 3 a day to one if i couldnt have a coffee since they say you should cut your coffee back to no more than like 3 coffees a day i figured one v wasnt gunna hurt. During my preg i had 1 beer on a reallly hot day and i think 1 wine but i had ms until 34wks so couldnt stomach alcohol even though i had intended on havin the occasional glass thru my preg. Then again there were lots of things i never gave up i was just sensible about how i had it ie deli ham, kfc, leftovers etc.
They do promote no alcohol during preg in nz because we are seen as a country of binge drinkers and unable to drink in moderation. To be honest i think if they properly investigated FAS they would find its a crock of sh*t but thats just my opinion as if alcohol did cause it there should be alot more people with it. Each to their own tho

This is really interesting.
Just the smell of alcohol for me is bad enough, although at times I though man I'd love a glass of something, but when it gets near my nose...nope
In my first pregnancy we didn't find out until I was about 5 weeks or so preg & we'd been typical DINKS & Kiwi's, but then one night I had a glass poured for me I sipped it & said I don't want that, My DH & friend looked at me weirdly & a few days later we did the Preg test & it was a BFP.
It's a hard thing to say what to do & I guess that is because they can't do case studies and test for it. So they err on the side of extreme caution and advise abstainance.

I didn't like the idea that the baby would probably get drunk and then hung over.

Hi guys - interesting branch going on here. I'll put my two cents worth in but this is only my opinion and I'm not preaching to anyone else.
I really love my drinks, especially a rum, bourbon or riesling in the evening, but now that I am pregnant I don't touch a drop. I would really love to, and everytime DH has a rum I take a good smell of it and it smells delicious! But I think if the experts aren't sure about the effects of alcohol, and how much is too much, then surely it isn't too much trouble to give it up for 9 months so that baby gets the best possible opportunity for a good start?
I have one vice - Coke - I used to drink it for most drinks every single day. Since I got pregnant I couldn't handle any Coke for the first 12 weeks. Now it tastes good again so I allow myself a diluted half glass about every second day. I don't drink coffee so this is the only caffeine I have.

Hi DanaJ, basically the jury is out, there is no safe limit for alcohol. If you choose to drink, you choose to deal with the consequences if baby does get FAS or FAE. I didn't drink once I found out I was pregnant even though we had heaps of occasions and Christmas/New Years etc but it never crossed my mind. BUT if I felt like I really needed a wine I don't think it would have bothered me too much to have 1. I couldn't do it in public just because I'd worry about what others thought.
FAE - foetal alcohol EFFECTS is a lot more common than FAS but goes under the radar. Your child can be affected by your consumption of alcohol without having FAS (the different look, noticeably different etc). FAE, usually undiagnosed, causes huge behavioural and learning difficulties which obviously leads to underachievement, and inabilities to function as a 'normal' person without actually being diagnosed as having particular issues. Someone mentioned above that its a crock - its not, its just that FAE is so much more common but isn't easily diagnosed and therefore stats aren't high. I did a paper on FAE and FAS linked to learning and behavioural issues when I was pregnant and it was enough to put me off drinking. I kind of figure its 9 months, I had enough self control to quit smoking and do everything else I needed to do, so it was just another diet change. I would also drink grapetise and things like that.
It is a personal opinion but a very debated topic so you are going to get strong opinions from others here. I just never wanted to do anything that would make me feel guilty if my baby came out not quite right as there are enough things to stress about as a mum without the added pressures we put on ourselves. So yeah, I basically live in the camp of this body is my baby's for 9 months and after that I can drink all I want. But I also never had cravings for it so can't speak from that perspective.

I agree with the others when they say it's a very personal choice.
For me I avoided alcohol while pregnant (although I am great wine lover and will be hitting up Charly for some freebies later ).
My dad, who was a medic, told me that things that things enter the placenta at certain times but noone can predict when. Once they do pass the placenta it gets recycled and it goes around again and again and again. For this reason I decided not to ingest anything that could potentially be harmful to my baby.

I was down to one cup of coffee with DD but this pregnancy I usually have one cup but got hooked to coke now (Usually I am a sprite drinker...even of that) and when I have a stressful day I end up with two cups of coffee. I try not to but I just do. I dont think it will affect baby badly or how it will affect baby but then who knows??

Hey there, I totally agree with Emz, I work with adults/teenagers/children with special needs, and in my current job I work with alot of teenagers who have either FAS or FAE, and from supporting these kids and getting to know them, I know I would NEVER take the risk once I was knowingly pregnant (or even since I've been TTC), I wouldn't want my child (when I have one) to live and struggle with the effects of a choice I made cos I wanted to indulge in something with unknown consequences... Just my honest opinion

il put my 2 cents in too
not pregnant- i love my alcohol and have it! to the point DH warned me that i better cut back-
pregnant- i would never! i too take a good long smell of DH's drink and that has to do....and if im really craving il pour some coke in a drinking glass and dream away-and that gives me some satisfaction......another time with DD i bought some sparkling grape juice and poured it into a wine glass- sometimes its just the ritual you crave......
then again im one that wont touch panadol and other medicines....even when they say its ok......it is a personal thing but alcohol for me at any stage of pregnancy is UNBELIEVABLE
