Topic: ferning ovulation kits (maybebaby) Posted: 31 July 2008 at 7:58pm |
I just recently got a MaybeBaby kit that is a little microscope where you rub some (sorry if this sounds gross!) saliva and let it dry. When your estrogen level is up (supposedly when you O) the saliva dries into these beautiful fern patterns.
I got great ferns the first cycle I used it, then two sets of light ferns at weird times in the second cycle (this one!).
I think I'm using it right, not sure. Maybe my levels are all out of whack ...
But has anyone else had luck with these little gadgets? They're kind of fun, and expensive too, so I want to believe in the MaybeBaby!

I've got an IGIA one and it cost $30 brand new. I found it to be very accurate. But remember to use it (any brand) away from food and some drinks. Ie don't use it immediately after curry or salt & vinegar chips lol. Its just the residue from some food and drinks can effect the result.
Good luck :)

yeah mine cost $25 brandnew from trade me....
the golden rules to remember are....2 hours after food or drink, including water....
best time is first thing in the morning when you wake up, and to do it same time every day
Never rub the spit onto the scope.....for me i found the best way was to (sorry for the tmi to follow), put the biggest glob of spit on it, and then to carefully remove any bubbles (can do this with your finger nail), and then left it to dry....normally took 20-30mins on a medium day.....on a day like today could take longer.
good luck

I bought the Maybe Baby one about a month ago, but so far I haven't had any ferning whatsoever – only dots. Somedays lots of spots, other days, only a few. I'm going to keep at it though, as I have a couple friends who swear by them.

I think my results might be more accurate now I've followed Kazzle's advise (thanks Kazzle!) about putting more of a sample onto the scope and not rubbing it.
This cycle is a weird one, am over a week late but 2 PTs have been neg, and I got a little ferning yesterday so what's up with that!
Treen I wonder if your ferns would get picked up with a bigger sample? I am sure it's made a difference to my results, weird as they are!
Plus I sometimes get things that aren't spots but aren't ferns either... wonder what they are?

Hi, I purchased one back in Jan and would say it is the worse $100 I have ever spent sadly. Going by the fern it tells me I am ovulating all the time, even during my period. My Gyni told me the hormone oestrogen does a sort of "M" shape in your monthly cycle so it can appear that you are ovulating even when that has been and long gone. I have chucked mine to the back of the cupboard!

My maybe baby shows ferns for ages during my folicle phase and does not indicate exactly when I am ovulating so it is pretty useless.

Do you do temps as well? I got the maybebaby cos I find it hard to read my temps, and even though I find them both confusing separately, having them both together I feel like I get a better idea of what's happening. I'm going to keep going with my MB!

Treen - yay and good luck
Well, there are various things on the market that you can use. I think most girls here temp or use opks. I think that temp is the most reliable. OPK are good if you have regular cycles. I would not give up your maybe baby just yet, I still use mine but I sort of know when I ov and the MB just confirms that. I got ferns today but will ov only in a weeks time. I suppose that I just get loads of ferns as ov gets closer. Best to wait and see what your pattern will be. I am also only getting use to it because I bought it about 3 months ago.

This morning while lying on my back for 20 minutes I got an idea. I put some of DH's sperm on the MB lens and had a look. To my suprise I could see hundereds of sperm heads swiming around. They seemed determined to swim in the same direction and I even saw a few do a loop of two. Unfortunately, they died pretty quickly which could be caused by the saliva that was already on there.
I must be the only phsyco who has tried this out. Boy, it does make me feel a bit better knowing that there are swimmers. I’m just hoping that there are a few Micheal Phelps’s in there.

Haha that is hilarious! Nope you won't be the only phsyco as I am going to try this out when I buy one of these things

Ooh I'm going to try this out too (spermwatching) - what a great idea!
I got my one from worzel1 on TM - she has the website baby4u.co.nz - it cost $50. It's the fertile focus one. So far I've had the not fertile and now the transitional phase and it seems to be in keeping with my cycle so we'll see if I get ferning.
The instructions for mine are here

I found I got partial ferning right before AF was about to start too... and you can get little tiny 'pods' of partial ferns almost anytime depending on what your hormones are doing. However, when I did O, for that 24hr period the ferns were *huge* and covered pretty much the entire scope.
Hope that little blurb is useful to someone!
