Man totally freaked out. Im working today (its show day so public holiday in chch but we have offices in other parts on NZ so I offered to be the one to come in) anyway there is only me and another guy on my floor (about 16 floors I think in the building) and I, thought I had smelt smoke but figured it was my imagination then the fire alarm went off. Started down the stairs by myself cos the other guy was checking the other floor and then smoke started coming up the stairwell. totally freaked me out, had to open the fire door but didnt know if i was gonna come across a fire or what! Luckily the other guy caught up to me and we had to go out through the smoke to get outside. There were about 6 fire engines, police everywhere blocking off the street. Apparently it was a fire in the ceiling of one of the restaurants on the lower level. we have finally been allowed back in after over an hour sitting outside and it stinks like smoke. TV crew were there so it might be on 3 news tonight! was pretty scary though

Wow, that must have been really scary! I always wonder how I would react in a similar situation - like whether I would completely freak out and freeze or go into survival mode IYGWIM.

On the same note, DH's winery burnt to the ground last night Such a huge shock. Obviously noone was hurt, thank goodness but all their hard work is now gone

ETA - I hope the restaurant is ok!!

Clarendon Towers.

Oh thats so sad about the winery!

I think it was scarier cos I was on my own for most of it. Normally when we have a drill or a real fire (we had one a few weeks ago...random aye, its not like they every happen and now two in about 3 weeks) there are a lot of you and you dont have to take charge its not so bad, although this fire was worse cos there was actually smoke coming up the stairs, last time was just a wee fire in the sauna in the gym so you didnt really know it was a real fire.
