The husband and I have our first IVF cycle in March. Ish. We have two dear friends getting married - one in Chicago in September, and one in Queenstown in October. We probably wouldn't risk the Chicago flight because I don't fly well as it is, but if the cycle is successful, the pregnancy would be about 6 months along by October.

Is flying while that pregnant ok?

I just don't want to dip out on flights to Queenstown! I'm thinking about booking everything and insuring it just in case.

I flew from NZ to the UK at 7 months! I would get refundable tickets just in case, but you should be fine

I can't see any problems with flying at 6 months, I would have been more than comfortable to fly nationally as none of the flights are too long. I would say that you would be fine for the one to chicago in September too, but if you don't fly well normally I can understand why you wouldn't want to.

I'm a dreadful flyer cuppatea - I went to Singapore a few year ago and made it as far as Australia before I started vomiting They (the flight crew) left me to it for about another 3 hours, and then made me have a drink of water and knocked me out with some VERY good drugs

Really depends on how badly you get morning sickness. I flew to Europe when I was 4 months pregnant and I had the most AWFUL flights then and back- I had really bad morning sickness for quite a bit during my pregnancy, but I thought I was over the worst of it, but as soon as I got on the plane I couldn't keep any food down and threw up the entire time (I also used to get air sick, so the combination of the 2 was not a good mix). Once I got off the plane I was fine....but I am never again flying while pregnant.

Flying to Queenstown will be ok I reckon as it is a relatively short flight, but good idea to not even consider the Chicago ones.

Wow, march is soooooo close!

Flying while pregnant is one of those issues with a lot of "ifs". It's generally safe to fly while pregnant IF your pregnancy has been completely normal with no complications, you haven't had any symptoms of early labour or abnormal spotting, your blood pressure is okay, and you haven't had oedema. Short flights (like to Queenstown) you should be able to manage just fine right up to 36-ish weeks. Longer flights (like to the US) have associated risks, such as higher risk of blood clots/deep vein thrombosis, oedema, and other delightful yucky medical things.

At six months along, you should be in what I always called "the good zone" -- out of morning sickness but not quite into Braxton Hicks/intense discomfort. You should still be mobile and not *too* massive in size (nothing more fun than trying to strap yourself into an economy class seat when your bum is wider than the seat).

I would strongly recommend investing in some travel insurance. Many credit cards have travel insurance as a benefit if you book your tickets on the credit card (my DH's Amex card has this as a feature). I'd also have a contingency plan ready, knowing where the nearest hospital is located to where you're staying, and letting your midwife know that you're travelling, how far, and how long you'll be gone. I would also let the airline know, just in case. Better to prepare as much as you can. And if you're booking your tickets now-ish, I'd also just keep in mind that you won't know how you feel when you're pregnant until you're pregnant -- you may feel amazing, you may feel like crap. You may get pregnant with triplets (!!!) and on bedrest from 20 weeks.

This won't matter if you're staying in the country, but when I went to Singapore just before I got pregnant, I remember reading that if you're more than 6 months pregnant when you travel there, you had to take a medical note along and sign a statement saying that if your baby was born there, you wouldn't try to claim Singaporean citizenship. Different countries have different rules for stuff like that. Just food for thought!

Offical Air NZ Policy....

Medical clearance is only required

for any complicated or multiple pregnancy
beyond 36 weeks for journeys of 5 hours or more
It is recommended that the expectant mother notify her doctor of her travel plans.
