 Topic: Foam or Innersprung cot mattress?

A friend is kindly lending me their cot, but now I'm stuck on what type of mattress to buy. 
Can I please have advise on what sort of mattress you prefer and the reasons why.

I was also stuck on this, as my cot is extra big, so couldn't get an innersprung one here in NZ unless I had it especially made.
If you do a search, you'll find what others had to say.
That said, I've got an innersprung mattress (a friend brought it over from Aus for me). I guess I just wanted all the support for baby as I would have in my own bed.

innersprung. i wouldnt want to sleep on a foam mattress so wouldnt want my kids to either. and babies and young toddlers are growing so fast, they need all the extra support they can get.

I have brought an innersprung mattress aswell, personally I feel they offer more support.

I got an innersprung for a few reasons. I thought it had more support, didn't want to remember to turn and flip a foam matress as I had heard you had to do that. Also I read somewhere early on in my pregnancy that if you can afford an innersprung it was advised you get one over foam so I did.

Maya had foam in her cot (now has innersprung on her bed) and so do the gremlins. Remembering to turn them isn't a huge deal as their head makes an indent where they've been lying so when I change the sheets I always flip it so the indent is up the other end.
I just couldn't justify paying twice the $$$ for innersprung when a firm foam matress is perfectly functional.

Foam. Good quality heavy density stuff. I choose it because it was obviously the cheaper option & wanted new mattresses for each child. Also easier to maneuver around & change & flip etc. BUT the major con for me was apparently innerspring harbours lots of allergens & the spring coil things are a great breeding ground for bed mites.
Did spend a big amount on a good quality single bed with innerspring mattress for DS at 18mnths - Hoping that should last for 15+yrs

that is really interesting to hear Glow and Emma, I was thinking innersprung but maybe foam could be an option to consider.

I just think they're only in the cot 2 or so years, and their heads etc. are so soft that foam is fine. I did invest in a decent quality bed for Maya tho when she moved out of the cot.

actually all mattresses need to be flipped, the mattress on your bed should be flipped and turned on a regular basis.
i dont find it very hard to flip or turn the cot mattress cause it is that small anyway.

we have foam.
haleigh was on foam, and has a foam mattress for her single bed and our cot has a foam for james.
haleigh always got hypo on an innersprung and would never sleep, she ahd more fun in bed lol.
we give our mattresses all airing all the time, and they are always flipped.

Thanks for all your comments....can't say I'm any closer to making up my mind as they both seem to have their own pros and cons.
I'll wait to see what size the cot is first and then check out the mattresses to suit that size.

NikkiB I am like this for EVERYTHING! Change my mind every five minutes on brands and models to go with! I think being a first time Mum doesn't help me, I never know what's best and I take everyones opinions into consideration and then confuse myself!

Its great as a consumer that we have so many options, but can also be very confusing
I guess the only thing you can do is try and gather all the facts and make a decision you feel comfortable with.

We went with foam, we didn't really have spare cash anyway. Little kids are so light that IMO they don't need innersprung because the foam is enough support. I'm actually quite ok with my girls sleeping on foam mattresses until they are about 10yrs old.

I'm with you, Teresa. I've only put foam mattresses in the cot, and at the moment Kiya is sleeping on a foam mattress. Josiah has an innersprung mattress on his bed, but that's only because Kiya has bunks that came with foam mattresses and Josiah's bed is the one we got for our boarder before he was born.

Im using foam too - mainly coz thats what came with the cot! I have a Dr Sprott mattress protector too - Shes doesnt even seem to make a dent in the mattress but Im sure she will as she gets older. I will definately try to get an innersprung mattress for her big bed though - if I can afford it!

Our cot we are borrowing is a standard sized cot, so I was able to pick up a new innersprung mattress from the Baby Factory for only $104!

I got a perfectly good innersprung mattress for $10 on trademe. It has no stains, no rips or tears and is still in great condition!

Any good mattress will be fine. Just get the mattress according to the cots size. I personally suggest you get an organic baby mattress. They are healthy as well as environment friendly.
