We (Z and I) are getting a pretty bad case of cabin fever - made worse by the feeling that I don't have anywhere I realistically 'can' go!

So what kind of things are good to do with toddlers? Z's still not walking (she's efficient at crawling tho) but she really loves to explore areas and gets fed up with being in a pram / carrier fairly quickly. I've taken her to the park a few times, but the only thing she can really 'do' is swing, and some days she doesn't want to. Lately the ground has been too saturated here for me to feel comfortable putting her down to crawl / explore.

Would especially love ideas for cheap / free things as we're feeling the budget pinch a bit...

Depends what you have in your area... are you involved in a playgroup? Is there a Plunket rooms nearby you can visit? (new place, new toys, etc) Also in Palmy Nth Plunket has a puzzle library - you sign up for $6-$10 per year and can borrow 2-4 puzzles per time, they also set out toys like an informal playgroup and it's run once a week. It's volunteer so I don't know if there's anything like that in your area, but it's a life saver for us! Otherwise, does she like going in the pram for walks? My Hannah did but my Briona was too bored and wanted to crawl!

She's ok for short walks, but over about 15-20 minutes gets super antsy and wants down / out to crawl and explore.

We're not officially involved in any playgroup - have one we've attended now and again on Monday mornings but it's not a great day/time for us so we miss it more often than not. DH wants to get her involved in baby-gym, but that won't be til the end of the month at earliest

Hey Margo. We are a bit the same. Maybe you and I could try some new things...like mainly music, or going to feed the ducks at western springs? We'd love some company on little outings.

feeding the ducks at western springs is a good idea - the park there is quite good too cause there is a big and a little kids area and so much to see for littlies.

What about going to the public library? Not sure what the one in your area is like, but our one has a great kids section, with heaps of big cushions, a rocking horse, massive puzzles and little tables, a few toys etc. - great for littlies to crawl around especially on a rainy day. Often the libraries will have free play groups or littlies sessions each week as well.
I love our library!

That is a fantastic idea...providing they don't expect the kids to be quiet...my bubba doesn't do quiet...she likes to explore AND explain!

(speaking of explaining....totally off topic shameless mummy brag...she has learnt the word "art"...I used the word everytime she pointed to a painting or picture or sculpture and now she uses it too! :))

Well, mine isn't that quiet either, and we've never had any problems! It's the children's section of the library, so I think they are pretty tolerant. DD loves the big play mats they have, foam blocks that link together and alphabet shapes etc.
We go to the play group at our library and they even get out glue and glitter on big tarpulins for the kids to do crafts. I don't remember libraries being that fun when I was a kid!

And well done Elle for a new word, that's awesome!

Come visit us! Or we can come visit you. Or we can tag along on an outing with Fiona and Elle. Social butterflies these gremlins are. And now they're finally mobile they can have crawling (or shuffling!) races with Z.

What do I do?
Well we go to coffee group Tuesday, swimming Thursday, have coffee at someones house at least once a week, go to a baby/kids gym (like lollipops), yesterday we went for a walk down the beach.
We visit family a lot (who are currently out of the country and I miss them terribly) and of course things like feeding the ducks, window shopping or taking a walk down to the play ground.
I love getting out with Olivia, she's so much fun to take with you. My wee buddy, buddy!

Fiona, if it makes you feel better, Z wouldn't stay that long in the carrier / pram either

I'm totally up for something, and AFAIK Friday (this or others) is fine
