Topic: empty sac at 7 weeks Posted: 25 September 2007 at 1:03pm |
I had an OB appt today and they decided to do a scan while I was there. I know its probably even too early, but they couldn't see anything only an empty sac. The ob thinks I must be less than 7 weeks but I am very sure of my dates.
So now I'm really worried. Has anyone else had an early ultrasound and they couldn't see anything?
I'm sure everything must be fine will the terrible MS I'm having, but of course I can't help but worry.

Are you completely and utterly sure of your dates?
I am hoping for your sake that your dates are out... when do you find out more.. are you booked in for another scan?
Hugs to you in the meantime.

At my first ultrasound with Ella I measured 5 weeks when I was absolutely certain of my dates, which would have made me 7 weeks.
They could only see a sac then and kept asking me if I was sure of my dates, whether my periods were regular etc.
Ella arrived exactly on her due date according to my cycles
Fingers crossed it is the same for you chicky, I hope the worrying isn't getting to you too much
Are you going to have another scan to follow up?

Is it possible you may have ovulated later than you thought? I always O about 8 days later in my cycle than the normal '14 days before AF' so when I was pregnant with the gremlins they changed my EDD from 2 Nov to the 10 Nov as they were measuring a week smaller. (we changed it back again at the end to get the OB to induce me when I wanted even tho I knew they were only 36 1/2 weeks not 37 1/2 )
Best of luck!

My next scan isn't until the 30th October.
Its possible that I might have ovulated later than I thought, i didn't really have any idea when that was anyway.
So is it possible to see anything at 5 or 6 weeks, or would that be too early? would you just see an empty sac at that early stage?

I had a scan early because I had had pretty irregular periods and could have been as far along as 12weeks but when I had it done I was only 5wks and they could see a little heartbeat/body - only like 2.5cm long if I remember rightly (2.5mm??)

I had a scan at 6 weeks as was very unsure of my dates and there was a tiny bean shaped baby that I could see on the screen. It was very very tiny though and I could only barely make it out.

Aww Mel ((hugs))
I had the exact same thing happen to me when I had my m/c, I went to have an emergency scan cos I was spotting and the scan showed any empty sac and I was only measuring 5 weeks when I should have been 7 weeks. I m/c the next day(but I had been spotting/bleeding for 4 days).
Im pretty sure at 7 weeks u are meant to see a spec of baby and heartbeat?
But seems as you have bad m/s still Im sure everything is fine

It's a long way to wait until 30th October - can you get a scan sooner? I guess it's a good sign if your m/w isn't too worried or she would have gotten you another scan surely much sooner. Maybe you can ask her for a scan for a piece of mind - I know I would if it was me.

Big hugs luvvy and like everyone else has said, maybe ask for an earlier scan esp since nothing was seen with this last one.

Please try not to worry Mel. I am sure that the ms is a good sign and if the OB was unduly worried they would have suggested an earlier scan? Give your mw a call to see what she thinks?
Stay positive

I've been searching on the net, I'm really bad for doing that. And found that when the sac is completely empty its called a blighted ovum and your body still thinks its pregnant, so you still get ms and any other symptoms. (which is what prob happened to you Sheza) Of course it might not be this, it could have been the fact that my bladder wasnt completely full or that the stupid OB was using a new machine he had never used before
I'm going to ring my MW really soon (she doesn't know about it yet, as my 12 wk scan was booked a few weeks ago) and see what she thinks. I'll see if I can get in for another scan next week

i would def ask for another scan now rather than later. just because you have ms doesnt mean anything cause as like you said the hormones are still in your body. this happened to me once and they did a trans vaginal scan as well to confirm. If she is reluctant to give another scan tell her you want one to confirm your dates as you are unsure now, thats how i got my 8 week scan this time round, and at 8 wks a heartbeat should be seen.
good luck!

Hi Mel, I would insist on a follow up scan just so you know what is going on. I have had fertility treatments in the past and always had a scan at 7 weeks as that is when they could see the heartbeat by and see if the pregnancy was viable or not. I hope your dates are out and it ends up being ok for you

With our angel I started bleeding at 7 weeks and had a scan and bubs was only measuring 5w5d, all they could see was an empty sac, it was a classic blighted ovum/anovular pregnancy.
With the gremlins I had a scan at 5w5d and they saw the gest sac and the yolk sac inside it, and then I had a scan at 6w0d and they could see the baby's heartbeat (only one at that stage!)
So if your dates are out and you are only 5 weeks an empty sac could be perfectly OK, but I agree with everyone else about having a follow up scan sooner rather than later.

When I had my first scan with Andrew and it was empty I had another one a week later as they said a week later they would be able to see the HB and I had it and you could see it.

I've spoken to my MW. She is sending me for bloods today, Friday and Monday and I'll get the results next week. Its going to be a very long wait to hear the results.
