Topic: Are 12mth olds meant to have formula?? Posted: 03 October 2007 at 8:02pm |
My hubby and I were just talking after seeing an ad on telly about some formula for toddlers.
Are we meant to be giving Jaxon who is 13 months Toddler formula .. He is breast fed still twice a day, morning and night. and give him cows milk at lunch time and he drinks plenty of water.
My plunket nurse never said we should and said cows milk is fine...
What are your thoughts?

My DD is just over 12 months old and I've seen those ads too and wondered. My own conclusion was that the formula companies are just trying to make more money out of us and it's rubbish!
My DD doesn't drink milk yet, but she drinks heaps of water and gets calcium from all the milk and yoghurt and veges that she eats. I still breast feed her twice a day as well (morning and night time feeds) so figure she should be fine.
Must admit that I sometimes wonder if I'm doing the right thing though, all these options make me second guess all the time . I thought about giving Plunket Line a call or something to ask about it, but haven't got around to it. Will be interested to hear what others say.

Nup he doesn't need formula. In fact at 12mos you can usually wean kids off bm and formula and only on cows' milk. The reasons to delay that after 12mos are allergies, not seeming ready, and being particularly underweight.

I have been told that toddler formula has more iron in it than cows milk, but I don't know if this is right. I'd say that if you're still b/f twice a day then he wouldn't need formula

Nope, normal cows milk/breastfeeds and water and food is perfectly fine for him.
Toddler formula is a clever way for formula companies to advertise as they cannot advertise breastmilk substitutes for babies.. therefore they try to make mums think that toddler formula will make their child more healthy.... while also putting their name out there as a company that makes forumla.. so mums looking for a formula for their newbies get that brand.. oooh that and they like to make money so why not make mums beleive their chld NEEEEDS it.. when really they don't.
Fact is, at 12 months, i think i remember being told that about 500mls of milk is enough per day.. and that because by then most babies are having normal food, and water to drink.. no other formula is really needed, it takes very little food to give them the amount of nutrients they need and that is best gotten from fresh fruit and veges and meat and all that. no matter what, there's always gotta at least SOMETHING, some sort of fruit/vege that they'll eat, even the fussiest kid has something.. but the ads target mums of toddlers.. who mostly are naturally fussy eaters anyway, and they pray on the fears of mums that their kids aren't getting enough nutrients to grow.
Plenty of generations of all of us grew up without it, on normal cows milk from 12 mths or whatever, and were probably so fussy it drove our mums mad.. and we are fine. Kids go through times where they don't eat much, they are fussy too, the only veges i can get Ayja to eat are carrots and the occasional pea(which you'd think i asked her to eat something poisonous) but she's great with fruit. Over the last 2 nights, she has barely eaten more than a few bites from her plate from each thing, but she eats a great brekkie, she has snacks of fruit and crackers, and is pretty good with lunch and water and drinks of milk.
I guess, after the novel.. My answer is.. nope toddlers dont need the toddler formula.. all it teaches them is that instead of learning to eat the right foods slowly that they can substitute it milk.

charli has been on cows milk for a couple of weeks now and i've noticed the ads on tv for formula lately too and wondered......but i'm sticking with cows milk, it's got enough of what she needs combined with everything else.
i would stick with what you are giving him

both my older two kids went onto cows milk just before 12 months - and so will RHyley. I don't see the need in having more of an expensive on top of everything else. As some one said if your child has allergies so be it but nope don't need it - espec if still BFing.

Frigging formula and their money making schemes.
Breast milk is still the best thing for Jaxon. It is milk specifically made for him! What could be better!?
Anyway, ignore the formula ads. Breast milk and cow's milk is fine.

Breastmilk is great for babies and toddlers until a minimum of 2 years. And even after that it is of great value to them.
(my own personal opinion is why should I give my child milk from another mammal that was made for their babies when I can give her milk made for her.)
Dont get me wrong. Formula can be really great and cowsmilk has its place as well. But there is no need to stop BFding if you as a family is still fine with it.
Formula can sometimes be great if your child is not eating as much veg and fruit and not getting enough iron in. A while ago I actually stopped using cowsmilk on McKayla's porridge and gave her formula over there.
On the other hand cowsmilk is great if your child has a varied diet and dont need extra supplements in vitamins and iron.
So you have to look at your own indidual situation and see what works out best for you guys. You are the only one in the best position to determine that. (with your partners help that is.

I think if you are happy with the boobie feeding continue it. A lot of professional people (PN's included) don't advocate BFing in toddlers as they are at the age of weaning. Personally I think there is nothing wrong with it and you should keep doing what you're doing if it is making you happy.
Toddler formula is good for the added calories etc etc if they aren't eating well. OR if you have FF from birth I have found a couple of websites that recommend FF till 18 months.
Otherwise just milk and water!

Well those professionals seriously dont know what they are talking about. Babies or toddlers are actually not at the age of weaning at one. If you go back you will actually see before formula ect that the weaning age was between 3 and 5.
Not trying to critisize you or anything. (critisizing the so called professionals.)

Weaning means to detach from source of dependence or to take food otherwise than nursing (check out Wean - definition ). So as soon as you begin solids the process of weaning begins so technically you're both right.

Ben is on the toddler formula and I have no intentions of taking him of that until he is at least 2 and maybe 3.
He has 2 full cups a day and it provides him with a lot of the essential minerals , vitamins etc that are not in cows milk, which is designed for calfs ( thats what out nutritionist told us) in fact he told us so strongly that since we took ben , my dh has never drunk milk again and has soya milk!!
But its a personal choice, my plunket nurse every time she comes asks why hes still on it as " a toddler with a balanaced diet shouldn't need it, its a con etc, we all grew up on milk" well ben eats hardly anything so whatever we can do to supplement his essential vitamins etc we will do and we know a lot more about nutrition now than we did 20 years, ok rant over!!!

I actually agree with you Emma, I think that we know a lot more about nutrition now and extending things like BFing and giving toddler formula can be an added boost. I don't think there is anything wrong with personal choice of sticking to it or switching on to cows milk/water. People do what they do!

Interesting topic. I went to a Dietician at the hospital to on referral of the Paed about Blakes diet etc with his Allergies etc.
The sheet they gave me said at 12 months - 24 months they need 500mls of milk. Formula and B/F can be weaned as they should be now getting all their calories from their food/diet....
......this can be one slice of cheese, 1 pottle of yoghurt, cup of milk to drink and a cup of milk used in cereal. The only requirement that Toddlers need from the "milk" is the Calcium requirement.
I fully agree that these companies prey on mothers with toddlers who think their children are not getting enough. Its a great way to pull in more money!
Blake has rice milk as cant seem to tolerate Dairy - has caused major eczema problems!

I have brought my last 2 formula tins then I will try Rhyley on cows milk since he will probably be 12 months once finished the tins. If he gets allergy from cows milk I proabably will use the toddler formula but if not then we will stick with Cows milk.

I know we are not at this stage yet, but was reading out of interest. I had to put Spencer onto formula and we have found out he has an allergy to the protein (which is present in all types of standard formula) and we are currently waiting for funding to get neocate for him. In the information I have about allergies he will be age 4 before he grows of it (if he grows out of it).
So if you give cows milk and they have an allergy you can't just switch to a toddler formula or goats milk/formula or soya milk/formula.
We have been told to avoid all as he has an allergy to the one protein he would most likely then develop an allergy to the others so better not to introduce until much older.
I totally agree that breastfeeding is best and is the only milk designed for humans to drink, but sometimes it is not always possible and is it good that we live in times when we have very good breastmilk substitutes and antibiotics otherwise both me and Spencer would most likely not be here.

Thats right.....But they can have RICE Milk and lots of it in puddings and custards and in mashed veges..there are lots of other food sources for to get Calcium from apart from Dairy/Soya etc which have the protein which causes havoc :o)

my #1 son went off milk (formula and cows milk) at 11 months old so didn't have a bottle after that and my #2 daughter gave the bottle up at 14 months old (although still loved to drink milk out of a cup) Rhyley only has 3 bottles a day (and the middle one he has some days and not the other) so i am guessing he is going to be like the others. and like Kelly said you just have to make sure they get their calcium fix from others sorces.
