Topic: The reality of shift work just kicked in. Posted: 15 November 2007 at 12:04pm |
Our Christmas Rosters our out and I am working Christmas Day.
This sucks.
I knew it would probably happen but still, the idea of missing Maddie's first proper Christmas is damn near killing me.
I am honestly so bummed out by it right now I am about ready to resign...I know I'm being silly but I can't help it!!
Sorry, just need to have a blub.

Oh that is horrible. Can you maybe arrange to have a special christmas on a day you are not working. Or make christmas eve special?

At the moment I'm starting at 7.30am .
I can swap shifts to start at 3.30pm but it means I'd have to do the same shift on Christmas Eve. Still could be better than nothing.

I think I would be inclined to swap to the 3:30pm start if it was me.

I would also be opting for the 3.30pm start as It would mean that you could spend the time with her christmas morning which is when presents are opened, and you would be there for more of the day.

What about having Christmas on another day? The day before or after?

yeah i agree - OR open pressies when you get home after the early shift...she wont know...just dont make a fuss in morning...
other thing....wake her up early and with DH have an early morning xmas...she will love it...leave her to eat candy and crap with DH and come home when she has settled down after your shift....
I dont agree that xmas has to be celebrated on xmas day either....i know loads of families who celebrate early or late...and a lot of mums workers celebrate with their kids after boxing day sales now...
what is important to you about xmas day and when does it mean that importance falls within the day??? and go from there.....

I guess it's that Christmas is such a big thing on our family...not just for me and B as Christians but as a family event...it's not just us....it's what 20 odd family members together...it's huge and I look forward to it every year!
Well I'm taking the 0900 option...morning with Maddie then evening with everyone....(Red, gemsmum - please make sure those boys don't eat everything in sight and Red assuming you are doing Pav again this year please make sure there is a serve put aside for me yeah?? )

Have to agree with you there, shift work sucks but this year i am only working xmas Eve and NYE, no on-call etc, this is the first time in 15 years that I have managed that, I am not counting last christmas as I was in too much shock.
sorry to rub it in, but i do sympathise

On the upside working with everyone else during the day it should be a bit of party....(well acutally apparently that is an understatement!!!) . Suppose we all need to make the best of it.

I've worked on Xmas day lots and lots (being an ex hospp worker) we always had a blast, a real fun day, a day when 99% of patrons are happy as anything, and nice to you and bosses treat their Xmas day staff well as a rule. Admitedly, i was single and childless at the time, but I just made the most of it. Good idea to have the morning together, get her all up on a sugar high, and leave her with Daddy!!!

I've worked a xmas day as well (while I was pregnant so no biggie for me then). I hope they pay you heaps more for working on that day (I know when I did it in 2003 we got $30 a hour + food and drinks, alcohol goes well when working on phones ). Also if they do it apply for time out that way you can try and get out of there earlier.

Whereabouts are you working now? I used to always work xmas day, but that was before I was married, it sucked, but usually had boxing day off so wasn't so bad!

I don't know if we were allowed it either (I didn't have any as I was pregnant) but it was there.
Leaving early is good.
