Topic: Transition to 1 day sleep Posted: 26 November 2007 at 12:06pm |
Isla still has 2 day sleeps. Recently these have gotten shorter- now 1 hr each, and are happening later. She is up at 6am, and was going down 9.30am, now its around 11am and 2.30pm. Even tho she is often going down in the afternoon close to 3pm, and waking around 4pm, she is still ready for bed at 6.30pm.
So she usually wakes from her am nap around 12ish, and is ready for anothe nap within 2 1/2-3 hrs.
Would one longer midday sleep be better for her?
Will this just happen or should I be doing something?
A bit of history- Isla is natually a poor sleeper, and we have had to do a lot of work to get her sleeping better. She has just started sleeping through the night in the last few weeks.
TIA

Sounds like she is doing pretty much what the gremlins are doing, altho they do 2 hours in the morning and one in the afternoon. Some afternoons they refuse their afternoon sleep tho so they only end up having one, I guess that's how they'll gradually wean onto one sleep permanently, by dropping that afternoon sleep and the morning one getting later.

Yeah I thought she was doing that, but cos she will only sleep for an hour at 11am,...she so tired she needs anothe one later! Maybe giving her early lunch would help her stay asleep longer cos she might not wake for lunch?!! Who knows?! I just wanna know Im not completely doing the wrong thing, cos Im clueless!

DD has just randomly started one sleep a day, although some days she still does two. She is a notoriously bad sleeper during the day, only sleeps for 45min each time if she's doing two sleeps and we're lucky to get 2hrs out of her if she does one. Happy as though, so I figure she's one of those kids who doesn't need a lot of day sleep (I'd appreciate a bit more from her though!). She sleeps through the night but wakes up ready to go at 5am which is killing us! What did you do to get your Isla sleeping better?
I find that if I give DD lunch at about 11am or 11.30am and put her down for her one nap after that, she sleeps for lots longer, so an early lunch might help in your case.

Agree with Emma - no wrong thing! Some babies seem to need more sleep than others. Ollie only has one big day sleep now and goes down after he has had his lunch. He sleeps for at least two hours and sometimes up to three. Depending how tired he is in the morning, I give him lunch anytime from 11.40 ish through to 12.30. (Depends what we are doing really) He then goes down for his sleep.
Sometimes he has a catnap in the morning in the buggy when I go for my walk around 8.30 ish.
Hope that helps - think they are all different so whatever suits you and Isla really. : )

Lol Emma! I have high sleep needs, but Isla is yet to co-operate!
Mazzy, up until 3 weeks ago Isla was still waking anywhere up to 6 times a night,...and after having been weaned off night feeds for a few months, she was back to drinking at least 2 full bottles over night, plus her 9.30 pm feed- this was after a period of being sick with 2 ear infections and gastro over a month. So we were going crazy, and after moving, and getting her checked out by a Dr *again*, and advise from plunketline, we got tough!
After bottle and bed at 6.30-7pm, we didnt go back into her til after 6am. The first night she cried a few times, but since then if she wakes, its only for a few mins. Yay!

Good thread. We had 2, 2 hour nap's up until 2 weeks ago when it all went to pot. I think she may be ready to transition but no matter what time we try the naps we only get 20mins.
From what I've heard Kellz, some kids naps get really short for a month or two before they settle on one longer nap. Others just transition themselves easily.
I'd say stick with what you are doing for now. If you do want to try for one, try pushing the morning nap back by 15 mins or so every couple of days.
I'm lost without Elle's good day sleep...come back, come back where ever you are! I need my sleeper back!

Hmm...Blake seems to be doing this stuff..altho his morning sleep has gone back to 9:30 and he usually sleeps til 11:30 -12.....Sometimes late in the afternoon he will have a "catch up short" nap as buggered plus dont want him going to bed any earlier than 6:30.
Blake is the same..even if he wakes from afternnon nap at 5...he is generally back in bed no later than 7.

Cos Isla has been such a shocking sleeper, I guess I just need reassurance that this irregular day napping thing is 'normal'! Thanks everyone! I guess we will just have to ride this wave for awhile!
Isla is asleep at the mo. Seemed really tired, so put her to bed 9.30, but she cried for 10 mins til she went to sleep. Must have been tired tho or she wouldnt have given in! Lol!
I guess I have been influencing this change a bit too, cos we have started going to mainly music and a playgroup which both start at 9.30 which was her normal nap time. Hmmmm. But she usually not ready for bed till well after that anyway now.
