Topic: Aarrghh! food again! Posted: 14 December 2007 at 12:41pm |
So he's 6 and a half months and has been on solids since about 5 months. He started really well but now will only eat bananas.
Surely I can't feed him bananas three times a day?
He did eat veggies but went off everything when I tried meat. So I went back to just veggies and he won't touch them now.
It's such a waste to throw away so much uneaten food. Any ideas what I do next?

The only fruit he likes is banana. I got some muesli and mixed it with banana but no go.
He had a bit of frozen apple in his muslin thingy and liked that but when I tried homemade or tinned apples then he refused it.
I've also tried feeding him out of his chair to see if that helps, or letting him have the spoon which was very messy!

It's not the end of the world if he doesn't eat at that stage so just persevere with the veges etc (mixed in with fruit if you are feeling kind)
He'll get there eventually... just don't fall into my trap and end up that your kiddo with ONLY eat dessert at 11 months.

I second perservering with it. Just keep trying him with a variety of different foods. I had a fussy eater too and found that if I was relaxed about it things went much smoother (and that could just be because I was calmer rather than him eating more or anything - IFKWIM).
At this age he'll still be getting most of the nutrients he needs from milk, so try not to worry too much - though even as I say it I know how hard it is to not actually worry!

Yeah I second what the others have said and maybe try mashing the banana in with something else and gradually reduce the amount of banana. I would also let him play with the spoon and give him finger foods and bugger the mess. Stick him on the kitched floor or get a messy mat and just let him go for it. Feeding solids to Spencer at the moment is more play and discovery than nuritishment.
If he doesn't like something just leave it for a couple of days and try again.
Try not to stress too much at this stage as it is still early and his main food is still milk I know it is impossible not to worry and stress but he will probably pick up on it and it could make the situation worse, you don't want meal times to become a battle.

Will do - I think my stuff is a bit lumpier than the tinned variety. He doesn't like custards - even banana flavoured! I think I just need to chill and see what happens as he's probably picking up my stress over it too.

I agree that all you can do is perservere....he's only 6.5 months so only just starting on solids....no need to worry yet. The main source is still milk so just keep offering tastes of other foods.

Well I have lots to say on this topic, but i will try shorten it as much as poss!!!
I agree with those above who have mentioned that bubs will still be getting most of his nutrience from milk at this age, and perseverance is definitely the key! I would know, my boy has been on and off solids since 4.5 months and we have ONLY just started them properly again 2 weeks ago.
It pays not to listen to all this junk about 6 months being the right time...they should be eating solids etc. That is just a guideline, he will tell you when he is ready and if he is hungry he will take it! I spent literally months stressing over the fact that another week was going by and here my boy was refusing to take anything full stop, whilst all my friends bubs would happily down three meals a day! I thought it was me doing something wrong, but he has been consistent with gaining weight and he is a very healthy & heavy boy.
We are still on the pureed foods(4-6 month jars), slowly moving towards the mashed (6 month jars). I don't make veges for him as he won't take them. He started off on the Brocolli, potato and peas jars & Parsnips, carrots and kumara. Both are rather bland. He refused to eat fruit FULL STOP so i just kept giving him same foods.Every two weeks he would go on and off food, some days taking a meal or two, others he was content with just my breastmilk. So i offered him food, and I let him decide whether he wanted to take it.
Now he absolutely loves his Vanilla & Strawberry/Banana custards, and is loving his finger foods etc,and I hav found that since his two bottom teeth have come through he is more keen to try new foods and loves mealtimes.
Maybe bubs is teething?
But yes all I can say is, hang in there ...I know how you are feeling atm, and yes they can sense when you are stressed or uptight.
Perserverance is the key, and offer a variety of foods/flavours every 3-4 days. Milk is still his main source of nutrience up until 8 months when you can start offering the solids before food.
But might I add, when I was having trouble Plunket suggested I offer him his solids before milk just to see if he had the taste/want for food! Tis the true test because his tum will be empty .
I hope sharing my experiences helped a little You sound like you are doing a great job!!!

Thanks for that! He now likes broccoli, sweetcorn and carrots mixed with apple! He used to love the tinned variety and so I tried making my own. Only when I read the ingredients on te tinned one that I realised it had apple too. I tried adding it and it worked!
I might try sneaking a bit of chicken in there too and see how that goes.
Someone suggested that eating 3/4 or a whole banana is too much and that it may be filling him up to much?
I think we are getting there at last so thanks for the encouragement and fingers crossed!

I wouldn't try and sneak meat in there until he's back eating well.. cause otherwise you may end up starting this whole fussy thing all over again.. just a thought anyway

we add meat to the blender too....she has had a sausage but is really otherwise yet to be given a piece of meat.
glad to hear he is doing well tho....sounds like he will get it sussed in no time really...
btw ella often has banana at mmrning and afternoon tea....she still eats three meals and has 4-5 bottles so banana def doesnt fill her up....actually nothing does...LOL!
