I would go with independant. I am trying to get a midwife from hospital because of complications but its not working for me. They tend to be super busy so you see them less often and you may not get them when you actually go into labour.
I would look on here :
http://www.midwife.org.nz/
they have a list to choose from.

IMO go independent if you have the choice, you get far better continuity of care.
www.birthcare.co.nz also has a list of midwives and they are in Parnell so must have some local ones. My midwife is in Glen Innes so a bit of a way from you but she is excellent, has delivered all three of my girls and on track to deliver the next one so if you want her details feel free to PM me.

brownarcher, my midwife is in Parnell, but on Wednesdays is in Roayl Oak where I see her. She is independent but associated with birthcare. Her name is Jan Clifton and she seems really nice so far. She is in partnership with a lady called Toni ? cant remeber last name. Toni is my backup and I had her during my last appointment. She seems really nice too. Both women in their late 40's to early 50's I would say. Have been midwives for a really long time. I will go find the number for you.

Vail is Toni's surname. Their phone number is 3020278. If you just leave a message they get back to you.

The other person I would recommend is Lee Moselen. She is based in Epsom, but covers all that area including Parnell. I didnt use her (as I know her personally) but have friends that think she is the bees knees as far as midwives go!

Cherie Davis is based at Birthcare (but independent). She's really nice and I feel confident with her.
