Topic: Spilly baby help Posted: 06 February 2008 at 5:01pm |
I have a 4 week old baby who is a very spilly baby (unlike my first). My problem is that at times he has trouble settling to sleep as he seems to sick up a bit and it makes him squirm about. He gets so close, eyes shutting then bam wide open with a look on his face like he has tasted something bad. He spills alot in his bassinette too. He does settle to sleep sometimes. When I pick him up to settle him again after he has got upset he usually spills some more or burps. Then I put him down again and it happens all over again.
He is a very gulpy feeder and I am having to wind him frequently during a feed ( I am BF).
Has anyone else had this problem and if so do you know any tricks to help him out. Would sleeping him in a wedge on his side help do you think?? Could it be something I am eating? I am sticking to pretty plain food at the moment as it is. Could it be reflux?? He doesn't really cry a lot and when I pick him up he stops, also he will quite happily lie on the floor on his back so I am guessing it prob isn't reflux??
Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks

I'm keen to hear what people suggest for you too. Olivia squirms and groans a lot like she is windy, and we have to burp her often and she just started spilling up (regularly) yesterday. I was wondering if it was something I'm eating as well.

Daniel had silent reflux and he did all of those things minus the actual spill, he swallowed it all back down rather than bringing it back up.
I'd go to your GP and explain all these things to them and they may give you infant gaviscon to try out if they feel it might be reflux.
The crying over spilt milk website is fantastic if you are wondering about reflux.
What helped us though was meds and we always slept Daniel in a sleep wedge, he was far more comfy on his side than on his back and I was completely comfy with our choice to side sleep him. We also burped him more often during feeds and after a feed kept him upright for as long as possible afterwards to let the milk settle.

I was talking to a new Mum recently who had this problem and cut all dairy out of her diet and has noticed a dramatic improvement in her baby. Her baby was doing huge explosive vomits, but was otherwise very settled and sleeps really well.

I've noticed that since I've been holding Jack upright for a wee while after a feed (which is hard in the night when you're so tired) he doesn't squirm as much. Could be worth a go? I know that I have to burp my bubs for about 7-8 mins even though they say you only need to for 5, so maybe try burping for longer/in different positions? Otherwise I would go to the doc too and get some meds to help.

both my kids were spilly babies, Cailin grew out of it by 12 weeks and Jeremy was fianlly diagnoised a few weeks back with reflux (damn health system takes forever to get to see specialist). Even with reflux, Jeremy hardly ever got upset with his vomitting so don't rule reflux out just because Harry isn't upset with it
Anyhow, you could try raising the head end of the cot up with a couple of books.
I took out all dairy for 2 weeks which made a tiny bit of difference, then tried on wheat which made a bit more of a difference but not much to be honest.
Also, please be very careful taking a whole food group out of your diet (like dairy), I would recommend going to see a dietatition (SP)
and also,
- you can't have too many bibs
- one tiny good thing is its summer so you can always get clothes bedding and bibs dried easily
they do grow out of it (be it sometimes a few years but usually only a few months)
- and lots of to you

Big huggs!
It's not easy. DD wriggled about after a feed like there was a lot of wind and when you are tired through the night the thing that helped me get through it was think about all the cuddles you are getting and giving.
Perhaps because of all the wind it's making him more spilly than usual, try using infacol or gripe water.
Have a look at the crying over spilt milk website, even if he hasn't got reflux it has some good suggestions for positions.
Best of luck!!

Sorry to butt in Lottiesmum but when using Infacol do you have to give it to them before feeding (like the instructions say) or is it okay afterwards when you see them having trouble bringing up wind?
Jess, is that up their left side or ours?
Once they've burped, is that enough? or should you keep going for at least 10 min?

Does anyone know if a thickener given before a feed would help with this? Hayley is still really spilly, not in pain, but does spill a few times after each feed, often waking herself up in her bassinette as she spills while asleep.
We are due to go back to Family centre next week, hoping we will chat further about this.
Thanks

Aussiegirl, my Harry was really spilly and after months of just putting up with it (and he didn't seem in pain) we got him put on Gaviscon (at Plunket's recommendation) and it helped lots. He was the same with spilling in his sleep.

Hey I just saw my thread up again thought I better come have a look!!
Well we have finally at 7 1/2 months had some reprieve on the spilling!! I thought he was still going to be spilling in his teens at the rate he was going . He still has tiny spills occasionally but no where near as often, so to anyone who thinks it will never end it does eventually!! No one ever conclusively diagnosed him having reflux but I still believe that he did have it!
Hope the Family Centre can shed some light on the issue for you aussiegirl. All the best but it is a real pain though aye!

Thanks, my carpet is suffering with all the vomit stains too!
Thanks arohuani...I will ask the plunket nurse or midwives at family centre and see what they recommend!
ETA: is Gaviscon a prescription medicine, or over the counter?

I think you can get it over the counter but I think for babies under like 6 months or something you may need a prescription?? I would go and see your doc anyway and see what they say. I know I tried Gaviscon with Harry but it was such a lot to get into him and he hated it. Tho as arohanui said above her Harry was fine after the initial few days. The plunket nurse at the family centre here told me to go back to the doc and ask for something else like Ranitidine (sp?) as it worked better and you only had a tiny amount to get into them. Then again if it's not reflux they probably won't prescribe anything anyway. You can't win sometimes can you!!
Our carpet is absolutely wrecked too!! 7 months of spilling has really taken it's toll, worst thing is it bleaches the carpet so we will have to replace it one day ( not while the kids are still little tho!!)

I spoke to the pharmacist at the chemist and said the plunket nurse had recommended trying it. I had to pay for it, something like $15. When I got it on prescription it was free. Just got one to try first to see if it made a difference.
And yeah Harry hated the taste with a passion at first, but then grew to love it. I don't know how cos ick it tastes gross.
Just take note of how often he spills, and if it's only straight after a feed or all the time. So that you can tell the doc about how many spills he's having, and how much each time. With Harry it was an average amount but sooo often.
