Topic: Nits, there, I said it out loud Posted: 24 March 2008 at 11:13am |
So I have officially become a mother, I am in the middle of dealing with my first family outbreak of the little blighters, courtesy of some delightful child at a play group or coffee group we go to.
Fay is quite oblivious, Neil is totally grossed out and has washed his hair 40 times this morning and I am soooo itchy as I have had a delightful allergic reaction to nit poo.
So we all stink of teatree oil and tonight when I finish work I will nuke them out with some chemicals. Sod the planet, I need them gone
Just thought I would share and get you all itching as much as I am They don't have an itchy emoticon, we need one
Oh and Happy Easter all

Hehe nits are so ew :P I had a bad case of them a couple of years ago which forced me to shave my dreads off :( I was so sad. Doesnt matter how many times you bomb the buggers with chemicals, you just cant get the eggs out of dreads! went a whole 6 years with no problems before that either :P Just took one kid that belonged to my friend and BAM. I am NOT looking forward to the day when my child comes home with them - they gross me out so much >.< good thing we're having a boy and I can keep his hair real short!

Ugh, I feel your pain! My Maya has had them constantly since she started school (which is only three weeks ago!) I dose them every weekend and by the following weekend she is scratching again like a dog with fleas. Thankfully the gremlins seem to have escaped them, I've picked the odd couple out of their hair but as their hair is so thin it's easy to see if they have any and there are no eggs etc.
Am going to give Maya's hair another big burst tomorrow to hopefully knock it on the head for a while, she hasn't been scratching at all this week but the shampoo says to redo it after 7-10 days anyway.

Argh, aren't they the most frustrating things in the world??
Our 10 year old CONSTANTLY gets them... she had 6 outbreaks of them last year and that was just at school!! She's been back at a new school this year for 6 weeks, and has already had them. The best product we have found is Mr Nits... Tea Tree Oil doesn't seem to work at all for us

We use Moov shampoo to kill them which seems to work, then Electric Blue conditioner to comb them out. It's $60 worth of products tho!

am hoping i dont get them again with eden, cause her hair being darker they will be harder to get out...

Emma have you tried regularly washing Maya's hair with Tea Tree oil? Doesn't take much, but should keep them away if you do it every couple of days. (hopefully!)
Mike had nits when I met him... didn't bother telling me about it for a while though! I could get rid of them ok, but he had heaps of trouble... no matter how hard he tried they wouldn't leave for good. In the end they just seemed to vanish when he left his parent's place (kinda weird as no one else there had them, and he kept his bed and stuff) It doesn't help that his psoriasis was aggrivated by the shampoo and he has REALLY long hair that he refuses to cut... needless to say there was alot of combing going on. Personally I think the shampoos don't work as well as combing wet hair.

That sucks. I only ever caught them off my sister, but she got them a few times from school. I suppose it depends who they hang out with, and how close they are. Maybe you should encourage friendships with short-haired boys

My God, Neil has just spent $60 on nit stuff. Nit combs, I have really long hair so need a long one apparently, big bottle of teatree oli, but I use that anyway and some nuclear nit stuff, not sure of the name ,but this time next week I will do a product review. My colleague is also telling me to get some cheap budget condtioner and put heaps on and nit comb them out, so will be doing that soon as I get home too

If that doesn't work then using hair straighteners is suppose to burn the little buggers out.

Oooh Cuppatea Maya would LOVE that, she loves having her hair straightened lol, vain lil miss!
Clare - the long toothed combs are the best, I tried a short one with Maya and it got the lice out but not the eggs, the long one gets the whole lot.

LOL Clare, just wait for Fay to get to school and you wont know what has hit ya . My girls have them all term thru as I clear their hair every wekend but by the next they are riddled again. I am SO over using any sort of lotions and potions that I condition comb their hair with a nit comb every weekend. Aso tried various natural stuff including tea tree oil to no avail. I have also tried a few different nit repellants but the little critters seem to love it. Argh NITS!!

Yep Monique, my hair is thick......it took me 2 and half hours to get the comb through my hair and it was soooooooo gross what I got out. I had a call from Fay's carer to say she still had live ones in her hair and could I come and collect her. So Fay had a second treatment today and went back to the carer with nit combs and lotion. I have also found a couple more live ones in my thatch, not looking forward to another mammoth session, shaving my head is certainly looking like a good option now.
I am going back to the pharmacy afterwork for some napalm or something to clear them out. I don't like it and if this is going to be my life for the next 18 years, combing nits out every night then Fay is off to boarding school and she will be an only child.
Can ya tell I'm getting p****ed off with it all

After hairdressing for several years and talking to and seeing many people old and young with head lice Ive found these things always get mentioned...
#Once you get rid of them, use tea tree shampoo
#Dont use Apple Flavoured shampoo on kids..Atrracts Lice
#Tie girls hair up and coat with Hairspray, because it sets hard they cant break thru it on to the hairshalf
#Also you can buy a gel for boys and girls with a nit repellant in it and its natural
#Section the hair bit by bit and whenever you see something alive spray with hairspray,it will stop running, which will give you time to pull it out.
#eggs that are at least an inch away from scalp have already hatched
Hope this can be some help

My nieces and Nephew have had them constantly for ages and James has picked them up from them a few times now but like Emma said their easier to get as you can see them before they get a chance to lay eggs I have found that if I put conditioner in his hair before we go around there he dosn't get them but when I forget he does apparently they find it it hard to hang on to the hair when theres conditioner in it so you could give that a go.
