Topic: Mice! Posted: 02 April 2008 at 10:57am |
I am at war with a mouse that's decided our home is theirs.
I hear him scratching around every day and night and it drives me mental. I'm not scared of them I just want it dead lol. I can see it's been in the bottom of the pantry. Luckily all our food is sealed. The other night the lil bugger was by my computer and I threw something at it and hit him but obviously not hard enough lol
I've tried setting one of those really good grey mousetraps which usually works great at getting the buggers but he keeps stealing the peanut butter from it! I don't know how its managing to get it without setting it off because I've tested it and it does work!
How can I kill it? I don't want to use bait because of Daniel but also because I don't want it dying somewhere and with flies around, maggots.. yeah you get the point lol.

You probably going to laugh at this, but i had a mouse once, and i would hear it at night and it would drive me crazy!
I wanted it dead! The cheeky little thin used to come out during the day, catch me looking at it then run away before i could get it.
What i did, in the end because i too didnt want it going away and dying somewhere to rot, set up a little trap.
Took me ages but i did it! I got a small box, and a stick longer than it. Tied a peice of string to the stick. Stuck some food under the box and sat the box up on the stick. After a couple of hours the wee critter went to get the food, i yanked the string and cought the bugger!!
I was stoked! So i took it for a drive to the forest and let it go! Saved me killing him too!
Hope you get him soon!

When we had a mouse problem I used the grey mouse traps too and they worked a treat, are you rubbing the peanut butter into the raised bits so there's none on top and the mouse has to put pressure on the trigger to get the peanut butter off?
Maybe it's a really light mouse. Love Kylah's mums idea. Worst comes to worst there's always exterminators.

We always used bacon rind in our mouse traps as it needs to be yanked quite hard to get it off, therefore setting the trap off Horrible little creatures, hope you get rid of it soon!

Willie used to trap them with peanut butter using the old style wooden traps at our old place. We had one here last winter and I had the ant man put a bait down when he was here last, at the back of the cupboard behind the skirting boards where they were coming in so the gremlins couldn't get it, and I haven't seen a mouse since - touch wood!

I had one at my old hosue in my bedroom so we borrowed the neighbours cat and shut him and me in the room, took about 10 minutes but he caught it and I let him outside. I felt sick and I cried but it worked!

No other advice than the other posts but as usual I have a comment. We are complete novices to mice. We never had mice in Uk we lived in 150 year old canal cottage in the coutry, but here in our 4 yr old city townhouse we are always trapping the bloody things.
We just use the wooden spring loaded traps and peanut butter, they might not be humane but Neil is too tight to buy the grey ones

I hate the wooden ones because I've got my finger caught in it once.
Funny that since I posted this I haven't heard the lil bugger but I know he's around somewhere

Ahhhh you're right, Kandice - I did laugh at you!! But only 'cause it's something I can imagine doing myself - I used to use these yellow plastic mouse-friendly traps in a flat of mine where the little critters became a real problem, and each one I caught got put in a mouse cage, fed and given a nice snuggly bed, then released in the bush as soon as I could make it there. I think they're sweet little creatures!
The traps I used to have were great - just el cheapo's from a $2 shop, but years and years ago so I doubt they've still got them. They were like a tunnel with a trap-door at one end, and sealed at the other. The tunnel bent in the middle, and you set it up with peanut butter at the sealed end, and that end sitting off the ground. once the mouse steps over the bendy bit to reach up for the food, the trap tips and the door closes - never failed. Are the grey ones a similar design?

OMG I am SO scared of mice, we had a bit of a problem with them when we moved this huge bird cage (that was there when we brought the house). I fixed the problem by getting a cat! lol.
We have had 3 mice in the last month and I am so scared there is going to be more once we rip this old kitchen out I am dreading it!
How can you seriously not be scared of it!
Love KylahsMums idea that is classic!

I wish I could lend you my cat!!! She seems to think that dropping giant dead rats next to my bed while I'm sleeping is the height of affection!!
