Hi there,

My friend has just hit 12 weeks and isn't having a 12 week scan as her MW told her that you now need to pay $150 for a down syndrome blood test if you are wanting a 12 week scan. I am not sure thats correct, and def wasn't when I had mine.

She is in chch but thought I would ask you girls if you know anything or have heard anything?

TIA

I was offered the scan and there is a seperate test (bloods) that I was also offered that noramlly people have if they have a high risk scan result (which I didnt) that you have to pay for the bloods its called the maternal serum test but you dont have to have it and not everybody gets offered it...as far as I know scans are still the standard...sounds bizzare to me your poor friend! lucky shes got you!

I know that in Wgtn where I went the only free scan was the 20 week anatomy scan as that's standard (and that's all I wanted). Noone else I know has had to get a blood test, they just paid for a 12 week scan.

When I had my 12 scan with number 2 they handed out a piece of paper that offered the blood test for X amount of dollars (can't remember off the top of my pregnant brain how much!) they didn't do this 2 years ago with number 1. They said that the scan was only showed up to 80% risk and the blood test took that risk facter to about 90%, the choice was mine whether I wanted it or not. I had to pay $30 for the 12 scan anyway.

I had bloods done when I had my NT scan in Sydney, but it's not routine here. She should be able to get a referral for the NT scan without bloods, and if her m/w won't do it, her GP can do a referral for it as they can do scan referrals up until the end of first tri.

The maternal serum test(bloods) is another screening test that helps make the nuchal test (scan) more accurate. But when alls said and done they are just screens which means they are not definate.
I'm in West Auckland and had a dating scan at 6 weeks (due to baby being a bit of a surprise), a 12 week nuchal scan (high risk cos of being an ancient 37 years old) and a 20 week anomaly scan - all free of charge. If I'd had the blood test it would've cost $85 but we chose not to as the nuchal scan dropped us to low risk.
I know friends in the UK have the bloods and the nuchal scan together in places where the screening is offered.

Ive never heard of that in chch. Everyone I know has just had the normal referral from midwife and had to pay around $40 depending on where you go. I know one friend whos wee girl is now 1, asked for a dating scan cos she had no idea how pregnant she was and the doctor who was actually new to NZ stuffed up so she had to pay $150 but that was only because the doctor didnt know the system here and put the wrong thing on the form.

Yeah, cool. Me and another friend both said to her that we didn't think thats the case and we both had our bubbas in Nov so didn't think things could change that quickly. Also pointed out to her that they can't force you to have a blood test anyway.

Her MW sounds a bit airy fairy and has told them that they don't really need a scan thru out the whole preg so my guess is that she is trying to put them off the 12 week one by saying about the blood test. Her family and his have high incidents of twins so if I was her I would def be having one for that reason...she has only seen her MW once and isn't seeing her again until 18 weeks..thats quite late to find out that you are having twins!

I had the 12 week scan and it showed that I was in the low risk group 1:917 but my specialist wants me to have the maternal serum test done because of my age and we have to pay $75 next week

I was never offered a 12 week scan, and when I questioned it was (eventually) told I could pay for one if I wanted but it wasn't recommended if you're low risk... Sucks if everyone else is getting to see their bubs early and you don't, but I guess it makes sense?
