Hey congrats!!!! I got told when I first got pregnant by my doctor to get a midwife asap as they can be fully booked up. I rang the local midwife clinic and they started seeing me straight away, but I saw different ladies, that have been all good, just until I turn 14 weeks then I will only have the one midwife whom I have already met and seem happy with. So I would say ring  one immediately and book them anyway and they will say when they want to see you. At least you can be at ease and know you have one and you have someone to confide in when you are unsure of anything thats happening too you and your body , especailly since its your first... This is my first too and its nice to know they are only a phone call away. Good luck!!!

Yea ring straight away. They come in handy for every question you have and getting them early you will also get to know them better.

Hey not a prob!!!  I was only 5 weeks when i went for my scan that my doctor sent me to (which was silly cos too early to get a date.) anyway,  rang midwife the same day. Saw them a few days later. So about 5 1/2 weeks.

Hey Shelley ... I got a recommendation from the doctor, as had no friends that had babies, so had no idea how or who to choose.
Took me a few weeks to make a booking, and I think we saw the midwife around 10-11 weeks.

Hey!!! yeah my first scan that I went to that was too early , all they saw was a gestational sac and no baby. it was a bit nerve racking cos I wanted to know there was a baby. Anyway they got me to come back a week later and then they saw something, very small though and a heartbeat which was really exciting. got given a disc with it on but it just looks like a blob, lol. I had another scan at what they thought was 12 weeks and saw legs, arms, fingers, spine and heartbeat again. Bubs was facing downwards too. The sonographer thought I maybe further but to go by original scan date. It was soooo amazing. Got given a pic of the scan and another disc so I can look back at it again and again. i will try and post a pic of scan in seperate post cos it might take me some time t work out, lol.

Make sure the doctor doesnt send you for a scan any earlier than 6 weeks because it can be dissapointing and you will have to go back again later.

Will try send pic now. Take care

Good luck with it all

I just booked my midwife this morning. I love the midwife I had with Maya, and she retired after Maya was born, but is back now which is awesome! I figure anyone that can put up with me for 9 mths, and deliver a 9lb baby with no tearing is worth keeping! So I booked early to make sure she could take me. Also had a chat to them about my recent m/c and the concerns I have and they were awesome.
My advice is don't leave it too late, as independent midwives book up really quickly and you might get stuck with a hospital team who are fine, but you don't get the same continuity.

Hey Shelley, I booked my midwife a couple of days after I found out (so 4 weeks). I only saw her for the first time last week though. I did already have a doctors appt booked for around 6 weeks and had all the normal bloods done etc and a scan referral because of spotting. I would definetly get onto it sooner rather than later and try and get some personal referrals before you decide. I found it quite handy as I had someone to ring when I started spotting. Good luck!

Well i was a bit different i didn't find out i was pregnant until i was 10 weeks but i went to see the doctor and found out then the same afternoon booked in to a midwife. It was actually the best thing to do because they give you phamplets and stuff to get you started. I would say book in as soon as possible.

I'm pretty lucky the my doctor delivers so I have her right through my pregnancy, I'll have hospital midwives while there until my doc comes but I'm fine with that...so long as I have my GP for the rest!

I just went today for my first appt - the lady gave me heaps of booklets that would have been REALLY helpful when I was first starting out!!!!
Anyway she said people are booking in for november already and she was surprised I had left it till 10 weeks to come in, but i thought that at 5 or 6 weeks i would have been too ealry...obviously it wouldnt have been though. Go as soon as you can - that way you have heaps of time to decide - thats what i would say...plus you get all those booklets and helpful info which is really good when you dont know what you are suppose to be doing...!

Ask anything you want!
Ask about her view on pain relief during labour. That is pretty important I guess.
Her experience? umm, can't think at the moment.... Don't worry about asking anything - there are NO dumb questions!!!!

Also ask her about the skin to skin early breastfeeding thing after the birth as well. Her views on pain relief (and breastfeeding/bottle feeding) are pretty important as Ana said. If you don't agree on these things, you need to find out in a hurry. I was very much of the idea that i would see how I went with both and my first midwife vas very anti pain relief and anti bottle feeding as well. I changed, because i needed to feel like she supported me in a good way. My second midwife was awesome.

also ask if she goes to any hospital you want. we went and met with a lady and liked her but at the end of the meeting found out she didn't work in with the hospital we wanted to birth at.
