Topic: How to stick to your goals Posted: 30 April 2008 at 12:59pm |
I have lots of goals ATM:
1. Stop eating sugar and processed food
2. Finish my work before logging onto Oh! Baby (!!!)
3. Do some exercise every day
4. Go to bed on time
etc
But I NEVER manage to stick of any of them...not even for one day :( I used to be moderately good at sticking to my goals but now I am hopeless and am getting very frustrated about it.
What are your tips for sticking to your goals? (I would esp love tips on how I can successfully cut sugar out! It is for medical reasons i.e. candida & energy stability).

I'm thinking that posters around the house listing the goals might help. Or a personal coach to kick butt when I'm being slack.

I'm not a good example, I leave everything at work to deadline...
But when it comes to weight loss/fitness I actually had heaps of motivation, I lost 30kg in just under a year and looked and felt great, so I'm hoping I can tap into some of that motivation again once bub is out coz I need to get my weight down again and start feeling healthier.

So what factors led to you staying motivated? Was it just the vision you had? I was good too until I had Elle and now I find it really hard to get out for exercise.

I think it was just that I enjoyed feeling so much better once I cut all the crap out of my diet, and that I found a type of exercise that I enjoyed and that fitted in with my lifestyle (going to the gym - I love the variety, and it fitted in with dropping Maya at daycare). I'm going to join the gym again once this bub is out and go while Renata is here with the babies. If I rely on myself to walk every day I don't stick to it, but with the gym once I get in the door I feel compelled to do a decent workout.

I had a major goal - stop eating crud and start cooking tea instead of getting takeaways. My motivation was the bank balance - so there was a payoff for me to do it - plus DP helped out HUGELY and he is quite happy to cook tea (with some help) if I can't be ar*ed (which is frequently at the moment). There has to be some form of payoff for me - maybe it would work for you too? Ie. if you do 30 mins exercise each day for a week, you can treat yourself to something that you wouldn't normally (maybe a magazine, a facial, or whatever tickles your fancy - my personal weakness is wedding mags ), and then extend it out to two weeks or something like that?

Deb you beat me to it. I agree.
Focus on the most important one, get used to doing that so that it's completely second nature then focus on the next one.
In no time at all your goals will be part of your everyday life and something you don't need to give a second thought to.

For me it's also about having a pay off so to speak. For me there are two. First I want to be a cop. That means eating right and exercising. Everytime I don't want to get out of bed I remind myself of how badly I want my goal and how I won't achieve it by lying in bed!! My pay off for working hard is being fit enough to sit the test and hopefully achieve my ultimate goal.
This also means I get my second pay off - looking damn good and bring sexy back! ( I so miss my abs!!!!)
As time has gone on I've found that I then don't miss sugar so it's now easy to turn down chocolate or cake or biscuits when people offer them.
It's also a reason why I have a personal trainer, she keeps me on track and I can't wriggle out of things! But in a similar way you could find friends who have similar goals and you could help each other, arrange to meet up to go walking, that sort of thing.
My PT also suggested putting a picture up on the fridge of my goal. I already have my police entrance check list there, I'm going to put a pic of Jillian Michaels right up next to it!! (of course then I have to tear hubby away from the fridge! )
Not sure if that is any help at all but hopefully you can get something out of it.

Perhaps set more specific and measureable goals? That works (umm...worked ) for me. I would treat myself each week if I lost weight and had exercised 3 times that week. I used to treat myself to a bracelet, just a cheapie from Diva or something. When I reached my first big goal (10kg) DH bought me a really nice Tiffany bracelet which was my Christmas pressie too
I really must get back into that.. one day

Sticker charts aren't just for kids. DH and I have our own stamps and on the days we exercise we stamp the calendar in our kitchen, there's no reward at the end of it (except bragging rights if the other's been slack) but it's nice to see a calendar full of stamps.

Sorry no ideas but just had to share... I just glimpsed at the title of this thread and I swore it said:
"How to stick to your goats"
The mind boggles! Lol.
