Hi all

We have been trying to conceive for a few months now after taking the depo injection for four years. My last depo was exactly a year ago. I knew that it could take a while for my cycles to return to normal. (No idea what this is as I was on the BCP for many years prior)

At this stage we are not to keen to start temping/charting etc as we are wanting to stay relaxed about ttc, I just want to know what your thoughts or experiences are on ttc with a short cycle. My last cycle was only 21 days, the previous one was 22 and before that 25 days. I am nearly 31.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Hey there. You're right it can take ages for your cycle to normalise after coming off BC. I have been off the pill for 4mths but still no signs of normality here! My last cycle was 64 days long! So the opposite problem to you.

Do you know if and when you are ovulating? That's when charting comes in handy =o)

I am by no means an expert but understand that it can be difficult to concieve with a short cycle as a normal luteal phase (2nd stage of your cycle from ovulation to the last day before your period starts) is approximately 12 - 16 days and needs to be at least 10 days for implantation to take place. A short luteal phase can cause fertility problems making it difficult to get pregnant.

You could try Vitex it's a supplement you can get from health shops It supposedly works to balance oestrogen and progesterone production and thus normalising your cycle. I think there is a thread on here about it by the girls that take it. Good luck!

My cycles are still messed up from taking BCP. I have just started vitex and hoping that it will help. There are a couple of girls on the forum who swear by it. The pharmacist said to me that it fixes a number of infertility problems and should be taken before starting ttc. It should sort out cycles within 3 months. I have had no side effect at all, a number of girls had a few bad ones (ie cramping) which made me nervous. Note - That it should be while pg.

I really hope it helps you as I know how challenging ttc can be.

Are you meant to take vitex as well as your normal pre conception vitamin eg elavit? I'm a bit worried about my luteal phase being too short as I ovulated on CD18 last cycle.

I took vitex as well as the folic acid tablets. It worked for me!! My cycles were all screwed up after my miscarriage and the vitex made me have normal periods (5 days as opposed to 21 days ) and I got my BFP on the 2nd cycle of taking it.

Vitex added 2 extra days to my luteal phase which I was really pleased with. This is my 4th month on it so hopefully I get lucky this time around :)

I've also heard vitamin B6 is great for lengthening your LP so that's another option. Or you could do both - I have been doing that for a little over a month.

If you've got a short cycle your LP might not be a problem, you could in fact ovulate early on in your cycle, so as long as you fit some BDing in during that first week you might be covered anyway.

But... because you've only been off the depo for a 3 months your cycles might normalise shortly by themselves anyway
