Topic: Auckland dining Posted: 16 July 2008 at 12:42pm |
Me again (You know you all secretly love me... It's ok, you can admit it)
Aaanyways, DF and I are heading to Auckland in a couple of weeks to watch the Broncos vs. Warriors (DF's favourite league teams since he was knee-high to a grasshopper... Which was only about a year ago HA!)
Anyways, it'll also be our 4th anniversary as well as being one year to the day that he proposed... SO! We're wanting to go out for a special dinner somewhere.
We will be staying in Remuera with his relatives, but was just wondering if anybody could recommend any restaurants nearby that are relatively pocket friendly, without making us look like cheap-ass scrooges? Haha, obviously being a special date, we're wanting something classy and yum, which has good wine... Good wine is a must!
I've been having a look online and I really like the looks of Iguacu in Parnell - Has anyone been there and can tell me what it's like?
Aaaaaand, last but not least.
How far is the CBD from Remuera and is it easy to get to? I'm going rampant for Dunkin Donuts... YUM! There's the Yank in me coming out
So all suggestions/information would be GREATLY appreciated!
My love and thanks to all

Serenity here's a website so you can have a look at Restaurants in the Remmers area and some..
Where 2 Eat
The CBD is relatively easy to get to from Remuera by bus or train.. or even foot if your feeling rather fit
mmmm yummy Dunkin Donuts.. I remember having them when I was on my O.E in the States, and then I came home and they had a few franchises here..

I grew up in the States, an devery Sunday morning Mum, Dad and I would get Dunkin Donuts and coffee (hot chocolate for me) for breakfast, and get the MASSIVE Sunday Newspaper, then go sit at the park and they'd read the paper and I'd read the kids section.
Mmmm, their plain glazed donuts are the best! Hell yeah. I'm so excited

COOL! Thanks for that. Is it relatively easy to get to from Remuera? We will have our car, so that's not an issue... It's just a big daunting city for us wee suburbians to try navigate

Hey Serentiy, sounds like its going to be a lovely weekend!
I havent been to Iguacu for years, but I do know that it can get quite loud and rowdy on a friday and saturday nights, might not be the quiet romantic evening!
Newmarket is nice and close, and there are quite a few places down there. The other place I was thinking of was Ginas Italian place up on Symonds Street, its a fun little italian place with great atmosphere and food, without breaking the bank!

Oh thanks for that... I think we were probably going to go on the Sunday evening, as Saturday is rugby night *rolls eyes*.
The other place I kinda liked the look of (more for the novelty than anything) is The Observatory restaurant in the Sky Tower.
Does anybody know what that's like as far as food goes? By the looks of the menu online, the prices are fairly reasonable.

There is a lovely place in Remuera called Banque. Lovely wine, great meals - tapas and proper meals. Not grossly expensive, and a nice atmosphere (and an open fire out the back).
Observatory Restaurant - didn't know there was one, thought it was just a cafe. There is Orbit which is up higher than the Observatory. Lovely for the novelty factor, but from personal experience the food is waaaaaay pricey, and decidedly average (to put it nicely).

OMG i miss those massive USA sunday papers and all the adverts that came with them....sad but true....Dunkin donutts - there are a few around...
Igacu - went there yonks ago with an ex - apparently it was the most he had ever paid for a dinner with a GF...LOL serves him right. Depending on what you order it can cost!!! or be reasonable to costly
Remuera is mega close to CBD and Parnell as well as the bays - some gorgeous restaurants in st heliers and kohi etc...we often just walk around and find one we like = possibly a good option for your sunday night dinner...and you get a nice romantic walk around the bays at the same time. one of my fave...Tonys at Mission Bay! YUM...cheapish, great food and great service.
Observatory - is ok. We do work dinners for DH there. Food is ok on buffet. Nothing flash but better than valentines.

Ren,
Iguacu is ok ... I think its pretty overpriced for the food (its the area) - its just up the road from my work so we eat there often.
Oh and parking in Parnell is pretty atrocious (you can only park on the side of the road and they are metered).
I cant think of any *fancy* restaurants in this area that I would recommend .. now if you went down market a tad ... Lone Star in Newmarket lol

I love Orbit. I think it is really reasonable considering a trip up the Sky Tower is included in the price of the meal. All mains are around $25 - $30 which is normal and we have always had really nice food there.
ETA: and it revolves so if you run out of chat you can just look at the view

I really really really recommend Francoli's in Ellerslie, DH and I go there every chance we get for a nice "romantic" meal.
I've heard good things about Banque also.
Portofinos in Parnell is pretty good. Probably a little to casual if you're wanting something a little bit more flashy pants.
Lonestar in Newmarket - again probably too casual.

Only the best italian restaurant I've ever been to! (and we went to a LOT when travelling in Italy lol)
Not sure it's suitable for DHs though (the waiters are to die for *drools*)
