Just wondering if anyone could answer some of my questions. Firstly we are currently building a house with a building company. If we get them to include a heat pump then it is an extra $4500. DH and I just thought we would do without, then save up the money and have one installed before next winter. But the wall we want to put it on is an internal wall and I have heard the if you have them installed after a house is completed then you have to have it on an external wall with the indoor/outdoor units back to back. Is that right?? Ideally I would like the outdoor unit over the other side of the house. Obviously being a building company, anything extra they include, they will add a margin on it for themselves and from what I have seen on the net, this model is normally installed for around $3500. Thanks!

Our landlord installed one for us this winter and it cost her around $3200. The heat pumps have to go onto an external wall, they can't be installed on an internal one. I wanted ours on an internal and we were told a big fat NO! My understanding is the outside unit can be put on an external wall, just means the wiring will have to either be under the house or in the ceiling space.

No it doesn't have to be back to back on an external wall, but installation costs go up if its not. We had ours put on an internal wall, but we had pulled the gib off one side so the pipe could run down it and out under the house. Might be worthwhile having a chat to an installer?

When we looked through a house the same as we are building, they had one on the same wall we want it so I knew it could be done during the building process - but obviously can't after its been completed. Not sure if the building company would be happy for us to arrange someone else to do it and not go through them lol!

Thats interesting that you say that Mel because my in laws are looking at replacing their old heat pump (about 20 yrs old) with a new one. Because it's so old the technology has totally changed so it all has to come out and be completely redone rather than just changing the units and leaving the wiring etc in place.

It's an internal one (in the middle of the house) and they will have to replace the piece of gib the guys will wreck uninstalling the old one and pay a little extra for the instalation just because its a little more time consuming and the unit goes under the house no where near any external walls.

I don't see why they would have a big issue with you using someone else to install it. It's just the same as them getting a sparky in to do the wiring of the house. Maybe you could tell them you are getting some quotes, and then give them the opportunity to match the cheaper quotes

From memory our's was $3500.
We have the inside unit in the lounge and ducted through to the spare bedroom behind it then some more ducting under the house to the outside unit. There is what looks like a small drainpipe running down the wall of the spare room, but it's only a junk storage room so it didn't matter.

I think as long as you can have a downpipe coming off the unit then you can run the other pipes under the house to the outside unit.

The guys we used were fantastic and didn't make any mess to the gib at all.

On a side issue - I'm not sure I'd want to upset the people who were yet to finish my house
Perhaps take the plans to a heat pump company and ask what they can do for you once the house is complete.

Ours is on an internal wall and they had to remove some of the gib (not like it matters - actually it now matches other areas of our room lol)

I'd say to get it where you really want it cause you don't want to regret having in a place that's not as good. I'd be honest with the company - let them know that it can be done much cheaper and say you want to organise it yourself.

Hope you can get it sorted!

Weve got ours on an internal wall. It generally comes with 5m of pipe to run between the 2 units.

Depending on the brand of heatpump, some like them to be installed by their registered installers, otherwise there will be no warranty.

Yeah I'd say that it is ultimately your house and your decision who you decide to install the heat pump. Shop around, like mentioned earlier, you don't want to have regrets about it later. And if you don't mind possibly re-jibbing if you choose an internal wall then do it that way. In the end it's what you want, don't base you decisions on being loyal to the building company.

Our house has just been built and the heat pump outside unit is on a different wall not back to back the installer put the pipes in before the gib went on and then came back latter to finish it once we had painted etc The installer did say if you wanted to run the outside unit more than 5 meters away you would also need a condenser unit which was extra. Ours was from Smiths City and cost 4250 all up but we do have a large unit as we have an open plan kitchen dining lounge study area so its kinda huge. We got mitsubishi which is great also Daikin ?sp are really good hubbys parents have installed one recently.

Hi there, I have just seen your post and have been discussing your delima with my husband who is a heat pump installer (in Auckland). He has said he agrees with some of the other comments made, in that if you are wanting it on an internal wall you would be best to do it while building the house, otherwise it would entail removing the new jib at a later stage (therefore having to replace it). If you are wanting to wait until next winter you would probably be best to look at putting it on an external wall, however the indoor and outdoor unit don't need to be back to back but the cost will go up per metre the further away the outdoor unit is from the inside one. He also said he would definately get quotes from other heat pumps installers at this stage and get advice from them and don't just rely on your building company.

Thanks for checking with your DH P&TsMummy! I rang our Building Co-ordinator on Friday and he was totally fine with us arranging the installation. We really need it on an internal wall, just because of the layout of our house so it needs to be on a certain wall to be aiming the right direction. So we are getting the next model up from what the building company we going to put in and it is costing us $1300 less lol! Yay, looking forward to having a nice toasty warm house next winter and hopefully we won't get as sick as we have done in this crappy old house we are in at the moment
