Topic: Medical Question Posted: 01 August 2008 at 6:29pm |
What side of your abdomen is your appendix?
DH and I are arguing over which side its on, I say its on my right hand side of my abdomen, he says its on my left hand side.
Reason I am asking is I am having really bad pains on my left hand side of my abdomen, like sharp shooting pains that make my body shudder and shiver when they happen They are almost taking my breath away. I have had them for most of the day and now I am getting worried.
If its not my appendix what else could it be?? Serious enough to go to the doctor tonight?

I can't remember but I do know that with an appendicitus you have the pain on the opposite side to where the actual appendix is. If you are in pain I would go to the doc regardless.

Right side, as they thought that was what was wrong with me in 2006 but they found out it was cyst that had just burst.

DH isn't even home yet. Might shoot up to the After Hours when he gets home just to get checked out.
Thanks for your advice.

Its the right side...but you can definitely get referred pain on the other side. A really good test is what they call "rebound tenderness" i.e. you place some pressure down on the area and release quickly. If the pain is worse upon release, this is usually a positive test. Other symptoms are fever, vomiting and guarding near the area. Oh, and your symptoms will get worse, not better with appendicitis.

I am going to the docs when DH gets home in 10 mins or so. I will be so embarrassed if they say its just "wind", oh the shame!!
I don't think it is though, its giving me the shivers and I feel like spewing

Nup that's not wind. I hope you're on your way to the doc's because an early answer will surely be better than waiting for tomorrow.

Nicole, hope you are ok?
DH got mis-diagnosed 3 times, they kept saying he had food poisoning!! He ended up in hospital and was operated on straight away. Dumb doctors.

Well after two hours at the docs, they have decided I have the early stages of gastro-something-a-rather
They made me do a pregnancy test apparently its "routine" for women with abdo pains. I was freaking out for a moment, but luckily this time it was negative.

Hehe so it was gas, after all!!! I've done a pg'cy test under similar circumstances, I was 18 and yes still a virgin, but my mum totally flipped when they dared ask me if there was a change of pg'cy! Oh I felt so embarrassed!!!
Glad you're otherwise ok
