Hi - I am due to have my first baby in Jan 09.   After much research, and if things turn out the way I want, I intend to combine breastfeeding with expressed milk bottle feeding.

Has anyone tried the above bottle system?  Would also be interested in hearing of others who have combination fed using breast and bottle and what sorts of teats were used.

Who found their babies adapted readily to this sort of combination feeding?  Is really hard planning ahead when I have never breastfed!  Don't want to hope for too much and then find it can't or won't happen.

Many thanks,

Sarah

I've tried them with lil miss using expressed breast milk but she refuses to have anything to do with a bottle full stop. The gremlins on the other hand would alternate quite well between bottle and breast regardless of which bottle I used so I think it really does depend on the baby. I think it also depends how early you start offering the bottle (gremlins had it from 6 days old, with lil miss I half heartedly tried around 10 days but didn't try too hard as breastfeeding was going so well) and how well they are breastfeeding coz if they breastfeed well they sometimes tend to be a bit anti-bottle.

Ooh but one useful thing I've found with expressing is that it helps to use a whole system - with the gremlins I had the Avent bottles, breast pump and steriliser, made life easier coz I could express straight into their bottles etc. Tommee Tippee do a Closer to Nature pump which I've heard good things about.

Yup I have the Closer to Nature pump, bottles, microwave steriliser etc - the pump has an adapter thingy so you can use it on 'normal' bottles as well. I the pump, it's got a softer silicon-ish part that goes over your boob and is much nicer than the hard plastic round things they had in hospital, when expressing in hospital to get my supply going I found the hospital pump hurt my nipples a bit but not my lovely tommee tippee one.

I agree with Emma, it really seems to depend on the baby. I was separated from my little guy for a day right at the beginning and he ended up having a bottle before taking the breast, but we were lucky as he seemed to be born knowing what to do, and hasn't had any nipple confusion, phew. I guess you'll find out with your little one soon enough!

JJ took the closer to nature bottles no problem and switched back and forth very easily. Over the last couple of weeks he's started refusing the bottle though, I hope that's just a phase he's going through!

If I was planning it all out and didn't have the circumstances we had I would have waited a few weeks until I could be sure that breastfeeding was properly established before trying him on the bottle, but it didn't seem to make any difference

Good luck!

Thanks for your great replies ladies.  The reason I want to do some expressed milk bottle feeds is so that hubby can get an equal bonding experience and also I can hopefully have a little more independence if I can give bubs to grandparents for an evening etc occasionally.   Another reason is that if breastfeeding becomes too painful then in theory I should already be well practiced in expressing milk and can fall back on this.

I know once baby arrives all the theory in the world can fly out the window!   So for that reason I'm not going to be devasted if my plans don't work out, but I will try my best.

This was how I thought too, and it worked brilliantly for us. I used Avent bottles as they came with my pump. On advice of my midwife I waited for about 2 weeks after birth so that my milk supply was established, then started expressing once a day in the morning, and DH would give DD a bottle of ebm before bed as part of her bedtime routine.

It worked perfectly for us, there were never any issues with nipple confusion (whatever that is!), and we avoided any struggles with having to introduce a bottle at a later stage - some babies are very resistant to taking a bottle once they are older. Highly recommend it!

I second that. We did the same thing using the medela pump and bottles. Worked really well for us as well. Started expressing when baby was about 1 week old. Never been any problems with nipple confusion either.

The only issue that I had was that some days there would not be much milk to express in the morning - but that just comes down to your supply I suppose. At about 8 weeks old I ditched the pump and I introduced formula for the evening feed.

I expressed right away (not one person told me not to:( ) but it still worked out fine..he took bottles no problem and breast as well.. though expressing for GRan to feed etc didn't work like I planned:)

i started expressing early on so hubby could bond with bub and i could get a break, it unfortunately backfired as Ali hates the closer to nature bottle and breastfeeds really well so there was no point pushing the issue. Instead of hubby feeding for bonding with her he now has bath time which they both love.
Do what you feel comfy with, i found the Nuk First choice bottle great with Xavier. It mimics a breast as well and doesnt have those nasty chemicals thats in the media at the moment!!!

Oddly enough the Mothercraft nurse was here today and she tried giving lil miss a bottle (unsuccessfully of course, that girl is waaaay too fond of boobie ) and she said she didn't like the TT bottles. She said the teats are too soft? I don't know, she can be a bit random sometimes, but lil miss doesn't seem to like them much.

Hmm - I might just buy one Tommee Tippee bottle and one of another brand like Nuk and see how we go.    I've been researching bottles and have found that not only are they expensive, a lot of brands are incompatible.

I have found TT bottles great as I had issues with Breast feeding and use to top up bubba with expressed milk every feed nearly for 6 months.  Due to having a c-section milk did not come in as quick so we had to supplement her early on with bottle/formula a couple of times so she had both early on and has never had an issue.  But as others have suggested it is all trial and error and you do what is best for you.  Best of luck I hope it all goes well and that you are a happy mummy & bubby

TT Closer to Nature bottles are fantastic! I sued them when I was switching from bottle to breast and Caden would latch on to the breast perfectly.
I now use them all the time as Caden is formula fed.

I use the NUK bottles and love them. They come in plastic and also glass (which some people prefer) and most importantly they have cute little colourful pictures on them. My baby had no problem using the rubber and latex NUK teats. But I suppose it is luck of the draw as to whether your baby will take all types of teats (or any teat at all!)
