After all my breast feeding angst, I have done something really, really stupid today.

I went to a wedding at the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellington, and forgot to take any water with me. I was there for a good couple of hours, as we had a bit of a look around first. Add in driving time to and from and it was a long time without a drink (and a couple of feeds).

This morning I was also really bad with drinking water as I was trying to get ready for the wedding, trying to get Jackson ready for the wedding and dealing with both a vomit and a poo explosion, which meant three separate changes of clothes for the boy. I also hadn't eaten very well.

When I got home, I fed Jackson and after a few minutes he started fussing as usual. I thought nothing of it until I saw the sheer concentration in his eyes. I squeezed my boob, and nothing came out. Nothing. Same on the other side.

Well! Panic!! Luckily I had some expressed milk to give him.

I have since had about 6 glasses of water, some lactation cookies and a mini-overdose on Fenugreek (3 capsules instead of 2).

But I am freaking out. Have I done permanent damage? Is there anything I should do to help fix things aside from continuing to drown myself?

Guess this is one way of me realising that I do really, really want to continue breast feeding!!

Aw hun it's so easy to forget to "fuel up the tanks" when you're busy and stressed, especially when you're out and about, so don't beat yourself up about it. I've done it many a times, and I know what you mean about Panic!! No permanent damage done here though. I just made up for it by drinking lots of water and spending the next couple of days eating plenty of the right foods to help build up my supply again i.e. lots of protein. As well as that, I found I had to let Emily demand feed, even if she wasn't getting much. But lots and lots of little snack feeds, as if she was having a growth spurt, helped build the supply back up again.

Don't panic! Take a deep breath and think about the women in third world countries who survive on minimal amounts of food and water and still manage to breastfeed their babies.
And stop kicking yourself too, I did the same thing more than once when I was out for the day whilst BF'ing. Its so easy to think about everything they need and forget about yourself eh?
It takes more than a day to dry up, I'm sure with all the compensating and fueling up you're doing you'll be looking like Pammie in the morning.

I'm no help as its been a few years since I last breastfed. But I do remember getting a natural remedy for increasing my milk supply.
But can you please tell me what lactation cookies are?

I'm not really convinced they do anything but they're yummy!! I also add some cocoa to make them more chocolatey.


Housepoet's Famous Lactation Boosting Oatmeal, Chocolate Chip & Flaxseed cookies ™

Ingredients :

* 1 cup butter or marg
* 1 cup sugar
* 1 cup brown sugar
* 4 tablespoons water
* 2 tablespoons flaxseed meal (can use LSA)
* 2 large eggs
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 2 cups flour
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 3 cups oats, thick cut if you can get them
* 1 cup or more chocolate chips
* 2 tablespoons of brewers yeast (be generous)

Directions:

Preheat oven at 375 degrees F. Mix together 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal and water, set aside for 3-5 minutes. Cream (beat well) margarine and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, mix well. Stir flaxseed mixture and add with vanilla to the margarine mix. Beat until blended. Sift together dry ingredients, except oats and chips. Add to margarine mixture. Stir in oats then chips. Scoop or drop onto baking sheet, preferably lined with parchment or silpat. The dough is a little crumbly, so it helps to use a scoop.

Bake 8-12 minutes, depending on size of cookies.

Serves: 6 dozen cookies

Breathe Laurie! You'll be fine! I had a wicked tummy bug last weekend and got so dehydrated I had to have IV rehydration and lil miss is still plugging in to the tanker just fine. I've just made a really conscious effort to drink plenty of water ever since, oh and I also made a batch of the lactation cookies

Thanks guys. Sometimes I do forget to breathe!!

It was just very alarming to have absolutely ZERO milk coming out, particularly with Jackson's aversion to feeding these days.

Luckily, after a night of multiple toilet stops due to flooding my insides, I have milk again this morning. In fact, at the 7am feed Jackson got really mad as the milk was flowing too fast!

Probably a good wake up call for me, as I am none too good at drinking enough anyway.

Drinking too much water is actually linked to decrease in milk supply - here

Just take it easy, have some rest and a snack and don't drown yourself in water - you'll be OK
