Topic: Persistent cough Posted: 24 November 2008 at 7:51am |
Tom had a cold( runny nose) in early September which resulted in a lingering cough. I took him to the GP who confirmed it was just a post viral cough which could last up to 8 weeks. It was really only when he woke up and maybe once or twice during the day. Nothing major. he sounds phlegmy when he eats but that was all.
We still had thr cough when Tom got another cold last week. The cough came back full on for a couple of days but is now back to once or twice at night and first thing when he wakes. He can sound rattly during the day. His cough is quite alarming and wil get both DH and I up to check on him...it almost sounds like a whooping cough type of cough.
Other than that and the slightly runny nose he still has he is the picture of health. I think it was definately a cold this time as his cough increased and he was a snotty dripping tap for a couple of days...BUT....there are a couple of new teeth so maybe that was it???? HArd to know
Anyone else had the same thing? I am going to try and get into GPs but I know that they will find nothing and I dont want them to put him on an inhaler just because they cant think of anything else.

Daniel had it for about 3 months almost. I never bothered taking him back to the docs cause like you said, they don't find anything. As it's warmed up though it's gone away

Nikki we've had the same thing here. Lucas had a huge temp one night and the next morning he started coughing, a really horrible barking 'whooop' kinda cough, took him to the Docs and he had tonsillitis! 2 diff courses of AB's and its still not cleared, his cough has lingered for the past month (and dare I say that he hasn't eaten a full meal in that period either).
The cough sounds like its going to be around for a while though, some days he'll only cough once, others a good 20 or so coughing episodes.

all good at the docs. Apparently its the type of cough that littlies get due to the size of their tubes. I didnt quite get what he was saying as it was a long winded (excuse the pun) explanation about the history of coughs (old GP). But he said, the loud coughs are more reassuring than the quiet ones.

We've got it here too... Ella's onto week 5 I think it is now, of coughing with a charming whooping noise, and a yukky nose and rattly chest on and off. The whooping noise kicks in when she's crying hard too, which upsets her more, which makes her bark more as she cries.... it's not very nice. First Doc said it was probably viral and to wait it out, second said maybe hayfever (I don't think so!). 2 friends' toddlers have it too, and one of them was given an asthma treatment and antiB's, another given strong antiB's that left him vomiting on top of everything else. A nurse friend asked if it might be the "100-day cough"? I wonder.

Meh - flag that 100 day cough suggestion... it's another name for whooping cough apparently!
Was talking to friends and we realised it'd been over 2 months since this bug started for the 3 kiddies, not the 5 weeks I'd thought we were up to. But it comes and goes. And none of the other kids they associate with it have caught it, though our 3 all got sick on the same day after a play-date in town the day prior. And their parents all had it for about a week. Go figure. I hope Tom's on the mend soon.

my boy had a cough that last months when he was 2 mnths old.........the doc kept telling me it would go away he ended up critical with RV ............ not saying this is anything to do with you baby but parents know there own kids...one good thing came out of it and that is that i know all the syptoms and wat to do before it gets that bad if there is a next time.........
coughs are always worse with kids and it bites that you cant give them anything...if he seems to be chestie with flem then run the shower close the doors and let the steam into his lungs.............clears them up real good..........good luck and i know its scary

had the same problem here! the cough lasted for 6 weeks! I was recommended Weleda Echinecea (sp?) so thought i would give it a go and the cough went away within 2 days. I just put the drops into his drinking cup and he was all good. I kept it up for awhile then got slack and yesterday he started with a runny nose so more drops and its gone! great stuff!
