Jackson was put on Gaviscon, which significantly reduced the amount of spilling he was doing. However, despite taking a lower dose than normal and only half as often, it has made him constipated. He usually has quite big poos, but today there was only a couple of little pellets and he strained to get them out.
I was thinking of giving the Karicare Food Thickener a go instead, but I was wondering if this would cause the same thing, given they're both just food thickeners.

Has anyone experienced switching between these, or using the food thickener?

ETA: Oops - sorry... I should have posted this in the reflux section...

I don't know what the food thickner is....but we tried the Karicare AR forumla and never looked back. She was on meds too, but using the AR helped immensely and she was finally able to finish a bottle!!
I'm presuming a food thickner would be added to the formula? If this is the case, a ready made thickened one would seem the easier way.

Hi Laurie...I do not know how to post a quote from someone else bu I found this on another forum
"Sounds pretty normal but it does sound like she is having a little bit of trouble but I wouldnt say constipated....when they first go on formula it can take a bit of a-justing, Caden got a constipated when he first had formula, but his were like hard little pebbles, I gave him 50ml of cooled boiled water with a teaspoon of brown sugar and it worked a treat. I also chaged his formula, Karicare made him bunged up. He is on S26 now and we have had no probs "

Also when j starts Ranitidine (if you are going to) you will be able to stop Gaviscon (once the meds start working)
It is very distressing to see your wee one going throught htis but keep your chin up, you are doing a wonderful job and things will get better soon

how much does he tend to have in the way of gaviscon. I know we make it up with like 100mls, then only give them about 5 - 10 mls at the start of each feed.
We use the karicare thickener and i can't really say too much as to the changes in poos, but it really sets rather quick depending on what it's mixed with, it goes thick much quicker with formula than it does with ebm. it kinda has the same sorts of ingredients but different, if you get what i mean.

Have a wee talk to your doc as to what they think in terms of the doseage and/or changing or whether they think the poo probs might settle down.
