I have been trying to work out what colour Maddi's eyes are. We all thought that her eyes would be brown, they are so dark and now I just cant tell. DH has brown eyes and I have blue. I havd always thought brown eyes were a stronger gene and with Keira getting my blue eyes (she a real mini me!) we thought the chances of getting another blue eyed baby were very slim. Whos eye colour did your child end up with? Im pretty sure most babies are born with blue/grey eyes. When do they usually settle into their real colour? |

Brown IS the more dominant gene , but if there is blue through the family the baby can have blue as well
Caitlyn has her dads brown eyes and olive skin (cow ) and dark dark hair , she does not have my blue /green eyes, freckles or light brown hair

Im expecting this baby to have green or blue or blue green eyes , like DF and I have (and both sets of grandparents except for my mum , has)

Brown is suppose to be dominant but some peoples eyes look brown but aren't actually "true brown" eyes so that is why their children can have variations.
My whole family has brown eyes. DH has bluey green and DS has really blue eyes.

blue here, I'm blue, DH is blue, I;m blue, tom's blue...not expecting anything differnt from this one either.  AS far as my high school genetics knowledge goes blue+blue must equal blue.  Its the browns, hazels, greens etc that add variability to the mix.

Both me and DH have hazel/brown eyes. Aoife has brown eyes while Eimear has blue. My mum has blue eyes as has DHs sister.
It still amazes me how some people can't believe that twins can have different eye colours ETA: Aoifes eyes had changed by 8 weeks I think

DD's eyes were the most awesome blue until she was about 8 months now they are a gorgeous hazel. I have hazel and DH has blue - his whole family has blue actually!
My Dad has blue, as does my Grandfather. In reality I am surprised DD has hazel as there is a very strong blue gene on both sides of the family.

   Blue here!
DH and I are blue and our families all have variations on blue/grey, so hardly surprising Hannah's blue.
I think by 5 months the eye colours have settled into their true colour - but may differ in shade/hue with age.
Slighty OT - Genetics are a funny thing. My parents are both lefties, DH's parents are both lefties.
My sister and I are lefties.
 DH is right handed!
Will be interesting what Hannah is! I'm rooting for a south-paw! |

Remembering back to 6th form biology I think the genetics thing works like this: Brown eyes  = dominant. The gene combination can either be BB (homozygous) or Bb (heterozygous) Blue eyes = recessive - so the gene combo will always a homozygous bb If the partner with brown eyes is BB then any children with a blue eyed partner (bb) will also have brown eyes (Bb)  (BB + bb = Bb)  If the mix is Bb + bb, the child  has a  50 / 50 chance of blue or brown (or hazel or green)... (Bb + bb = either Bb or bb) Confusing? *coughspot the former science geekcough*

Thats what I remember too Joscia (you geek )
Tishy , the people that cant believe your twins have two different eye colours, wonder what they would make of the twins born recently that are black and white ...

Yeah that makes sense. DH must have a Bb gene. His family is exactly half brown, half blue. Mine all blue except my dad. I think there must be a pretty strong blue gene in there. As with Hair, DH and I were both blondies as kids and are now brown/dark brown. Keira is blond and Maddi went straight to dark. Sometimes I wonder where this child came from I think we are all righties too so will be interesting to see if she follows suit. |

I'm not sure how 'handedness' works - both my parents are right-handed, but my sis and I are both lefties... strange... |

Well Emily's eyes have turned out to be bit of a mix. When she was born they were the usual baby blue/grey, then they started to look blue/green, then green, then hazel/green now more hazel/brown. I think they're going to stay that way now.
DH has hazel eyes. DH's mum has hazel eyes. DH's dad has blue/grey eyes.

I have green/blue with a hint of hazel. My mum has brown eyes (her Mum the brown eyes, her dad the blue eyes - but Mum and all her 8 siblings ended up with brown eyes so probably they were all Bb). Not sure what colour my birth father's eyes were but I think from photos they were green.

I have green eyes, DH has brown and both the kids have blue. My dad and DH's dad both have blue so am guessing thats where it comes from. I was told that normally by 12 weeks they will have started to change if they are going to, but it can take up to 2 years. The kids I know whose eyes have changed have started about 8-12 weeks. |

re the handedness , I'm left-handed and my twin sister is right handed. I'm totally convinced that I'll have one of each in my twins too. No scientific proof but that's only garbage anyway |

My mum has brown eyes and my dad has green eyes. I have very pale blue eyes and so does Sam. His dad has blue eyes and so do both his parents. My hair is dark brown and Sam has the same medium brown hair as his dad.   Not a lot of blue eyes in my family so not sure how I got them!
