After sterilising in our microwave steriliser, my breast pump parts and bottle teats are drying greasy looking. I have tried cleaning the steriliser with boiling soapy water. Everything looks ok when it comes out, but is drying with a film.

I am guessing it's something to do with the water on the bits after it comes out of the steriliser.

Anyway, I am going to put everything through the dishwasher, but am wondering what to do. Do I use normal dishwasher powder? Or no powder at all? Any tips on how to do this? I would prefer not to have to, but need to get everything super clean again.

I used to put the breast pump stuff in the dishwasher along with all the other dishes and use normal powder.

Although it would then go into the sterliser after being washed.

Can you put the steraliser into the dishwasher (then it should remove whatever is cause the film) and then put the pump back into it after everything is clean again?

I think normally they just say to put on the top rack and I would use the normal powder. Might be good to put in with nothing else in there as well as I put my bottles in once and they came out orange, I assume from something else that was in there. The bottle instructions said it was ok if they discoloured but they did look manky.

Am going to put the steriliser in as well. Hopefully this fixes it.

Have just thought that it might be the bottle brush too... used to have a Tommee Tippee one with the attached sponge, but it wore out and now I have another one that I don't like so much.

Will see how I get on.

Just a quick mention that if you are a bit uneasy about using normal dishwasher powder (personally I just hate how chemical-ly it smells) you can buy Eco Store's version, which is natural ... also, in case you're not aware, I think that after 3 months you don't have to sterilise anymore (well that's what Plunket said, but I kept sterilising till about 5 months).

I got told to rub things with salt to get any breast milk greasy residue that doesn't come off in the steriliser. I did this & it seemed to work well.
3yr old gorgeous ID twin boys.

Tommee Tippee have a thingee that you can put your teats into and then stick that into the dishwasher. I saw them at Baby City (not sure of the cost.

I stick his bottles on the top rack and the teats on the top tray under a plastic container.

We still steralise .. but thats out of habit more than necessity (and it keeps her bottles in their own unit on the bench out of the way)

Thanks all! Seems to have done the trick.

I find it easy to sterilise, seeing as I am washing anyway, so will keep doing it for a bit longer.
