What's involved and who do we see about it? We have been considering being a host family for a couple of months now.

We are in Gisborne though so I guess it wouldn't be the first area a exchange student would choose, just looking for some info.

Thanks

I grew up in Gissy and there were always a few exchange students floating around, so you might be surprised. I vaguely recall there being advertisements in the paper seeking host families at the start of the school year, but don't know if thats still the case. I'd suggest you contact the schools (its not like Gissy has many ) and ask. They should be able to put you in touch with the right people.
I can't help you on what exchange families actually have to do though sorry!

You normally get paid a weekly allowence and provide all meals and are expected to envolve the person in normal family life. I guess that depends on the age of the person too, as obviosly u will have more responsibility if the person is a minor. The homestays are normally arranged through a homestay/exchange student organisation so there is a middle man to go to if either you or the student is having problems etc.
Exchange students can mean that the person stays with you for a set ammount of time (like a year) and then the student in you house goes there for a year, but Im sure there is also a need for families that doent want to 'exchange' a student as such, but want to be a host family.
Exchange periods can be from a few weeks to a year long.
We were a host family for just a few weeks when I was at intermediate, but while at highschool I looked into being an exchange student myself.

You could contact the Polytech or the highschools. Where we lived in Auck there was a local agency that organised all the home stays in the local area- the citizens advise bureau may know if something like hat exisits here, or agian try the schools!

Try this site http://www.yfu.co.nz/hosting/

I just read the info on this site, and u dont get paid anything and need to provide meals, but the student will have spending money.

Gisborne doesn't really have lots of exchange students beyond high school - am pretty sure they closed the ESOL course at the polytech. high schools are the best bet, but as kellz said, no money.

Do you mean you want a homestay student (who would bring in a little bit of money), or a student as a cultural exchange for the fun of it (in which case you're expected to pay for everything)? My parents have just finished being a host family for a norwegian student through AFS, rewarding, but can be full on. They're ALWAYS looking for host families if that's what you mean.

Both me and my brother were exchange students through AFS  and my parents have hosted around 4 exchange students (a different times). You don't get paid, but it is very rewarding and I still keep in touch with my host family and the exchange students we have hosted. Like weegee said they are always on the look out for exchange students and I would have thought Gisborne would be a really nice area for students to live in (I ended up living in a small village during my exchange and loved it!.

We have one and get paid $200 a week through the local high school. We supply main meals, a bedroom, bathroom etc and she buys any extra that she wants

We have a pretty big house, but it is hard having someone else in your house.

Ours tends to sleep ALOT and is quite unmotivated, but the money has been really helpful and she is a really nice girl
Isaac is 6, Ethan is 4, Rico is 2 and Hunter is almost 1!
