Topic: Valium while pregnant Posted: 19 May 2009 at 9:55pm |
was just hoping I can find someone who has taken valium (diazepam) while pregnant?
I'm going through a pretty rocky time atm and my doctor, who I trust completely, prescribed me the weakest possible dosage of valium to help get me to sleep, eat, function etc as close to normal as possible, and ward off any depression coming back (have been off meds for a year now).
Of course I've googled it, and a lot of sites and articles have links with Valium to behavioural disorders in children, so naturally you worry. But, I also know and have researched the side effects of stress and chemical imbalance of a mother on the unborn child. The possible effects seem to be about the same, but I guess it's case-by-case as to how severe.
Was just hoping someone can give me positive stories, or just say 'been there, done that'? TIA

Emz I don't know about the valium sorry, but I just wanted to offer you some cyber hugs. Rocky times suck and I hope things get better for you soon
My instinct would be to trust the real Dr and ignore Dr Google, but I haven't actually been in this situation, so you can ignore Dr T-Rex if you like

Hey lovely!
I say GOOGLE IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!!
Trust your doctor, he knows your history (and your present!) so will be doing what is best for you, and your wee girl (and Jackson, ultimately).

Oh mate, Google SUCKS!!!!!
HAve complete trust in your Dr, he knows you best and he spent a loooooong time at medical school. If it would make you feel better, have a chat with him about what you have read or heard that way you hear from him his thoughts.
I hope things get better for you soon. I suffered severe ante natal depression while preg with Charlotte, I have been on and off meds most of my adult life. My Dr was fab for asking questions etc.
Hugs to you. xxx

Lil miss was 'medicated' via me for the first 25 weeks of my pregnancy (albeit with a tricyclic rather than a benzo) and she hasn't shown any ill effects. I did worry a lot when I was pregnant with her as the Medsafe info said it wasn't suitable during pregnancy even tho my doc *assured* me it was - I should have just trusted my doc.

Thanks all!
Fats - yeah had AND and PND with Jack and have suffered depression on and off since I was about 15 and it just really sucks that the pregnancy other than my own issues is going really well, whereas last time I was great but the pregnancy was crap! Always the way I guess.
Emma - thanks for sharing that with me. I'm only on 2mg I think and can take up to 3 of those but find myself feeling very guilty about taking them 1) for the baby, and 2) because if/when Jack wakes up in the middle of the night (last night was 6 times) I'm all he has, and I hate being 'not quite there' to deal with that.
It's just reassuring to see other people saying yes it's a good thing (even though most of you don't know the circumstances lol) rather than 'what the hell are you thinking' kind of thing. Here's hoping it's a short term fix anyway

Ah well, better to be a hopefully happy and healthy mum to be than a miserable and unhappy and probably stressed out one huh? Sometimes the best option is to take drugs....good luck with the pregnancy!
