Topic: Folic acid, How much is too much? Posted: 20 July 2009 at 6:00pm |
DH and I are planning on TTC #2 in 3-6 months.
I'm starting on folic acid in preparation.
I bought 800mcg tablets, knowing that's how much you need when pregnant. Is this too much to take beforehand?
I was going to ask at the pharmacy, but the lady I dealt with seemed quite keen to put through my transaction and move me on

I just checked my Elevit box and it says 800 per tablet and I only take 1 per day.

Elevit is designed to take in the 3 months leading up to conception, too, isn't it?
So me taking 800mcg for the next 3 months should be fine?
I don't want to OD on folic acid

I would check for the length of time that you can take it rather than the standard dose.

Elevit is for before, during and after pregnancy.
I started taking it a few months ago in preparation of ttc. I took it last pregnancy and the whole time I b/f too.
I would think the tablets you have are fine for before pregnancy too

Don't worry about 800mcg, it's really not much. I've been prescribed 5mg (so over 6x that much) just in case I fell preggers again. Any that your body doesn't need you will pee out.

those tablets should be fine. I went to the doc just before we started TTC and she gave me a script for folic acid with the same amount.

I was told to take 800mg for three months before conception. Well I haven't had a baby yet so have been taking it for 10 months. It's just a B vitamin so your body will get rid of any it doesn't need.

I was taking Elevit for the 9 months of TTC and right up to about 2 weeks ago when I changed to another Preg and BF capsule.
I think for memory my Dr recommended 800mcg.

I'm the same as Stacey - before these two, I was prescribed 5mg per day and took them for 2 months before conception and continued until 12w.

Folic acid is a B vitamin and is water-soluble - anything not needed by the body, gets peed out. This is why you need to take it daily as the body does not store the surplus.

remeber too that you can get it from your food as well so its likely that you will have a bit more than that each day anyway.

yeah 5mg is only for people who are prescribed that much for various reasons..i forgot my tablet once and it said don't exceed the recommended dose but i guess they have to put that on there..my mw and doc said 800 (in lead up and when preg till 12 weeks) with no other multi vitamin thing was fine..:)
