Topic: Two under 2!! Freaking out. Posted: 29 July 2009 at 12:17pm |
Well it looks like my family unit is going to be complete sooner than I thought
DF and I only want two children and we did want them close together but never imagined they would be this close Found out I am pregnant with #2 yesterday and I think I spent the day in shock. Reality is kicking in today. I have cried twice and am even a little emotional while writing this
We are so happy about being pregnant but my brain has clicked into overdrive.
Can I do this? Am I going to be able to give Jaye the attention he deserves? What about the dreaded first 3months after bubs arrives? How am I going to cope when DF goes back to work? What about $$? How can I grow another pair of arms?
I am just being silly I know! Jaye will be 18months when bubs arrives. I am very lucky to have a wonderful partner who is an amazing father and also a very supportive family.
Mums of two under 2 how did/do you do it? Any advice?

Im just about to become a mummy of 2 under 2 and my boy is only JUST 13 months lol, my bubs is due in just under 3 weeks, eeek
Im not too worried really...I am still able to give caden lots of attention, the only time I couldnt was when I had MS, and Caden was only 6 months old then, but we got through it
Im just going to make sure that Caden is always involved in what Im doing, so he never feels left out
You will be fine

You will be fine! It ain't easy but is isn't as hard as you imagine it will be either.
There are so many awesome things about having kids close together too!
I wish you all the best! I know how freaked out you feel - I was that same lol but the confidence you have 2nd time around just from having some Mummy experience already really helps - and its a lot of fun with never a dull moment!

Im sure you will be fine! Your wee one will be walking etc by then so could even be quite helpful to go get you stuff that you need for baby etc.
My friend said when she had 3 under 1 - yes 3 UNDER 1 - that you just cope, you just do. Somehow you find it in you, some days you go without having a shower but my kids are always feed clean and happy - I think shes super Mum! Lol.
She had twins was on clomid, took quite a while, had the twins then found out she was pregnant - wondering how on earth that happened because she needed clomid to get pregnant the first time!
There is 362 days between the twins and the youngest lol.
So if it makes you feel ANY better there is always someone "worse" off than you lol.

Piece of cake yes the first 3 months are bloody hard...but then the first 3 months of your first were probably bloody hard. 2nd time around at least they go so fast. Now it is great. They are both starting to play together and I dont really find it hard at all. It just becomes a pain for things like shopping (so that saves me money).
We have 17months between them and it really is ok!

Ok BREATHE, it is totally doable and not only that it is also totally awesome.
I have a 19 month age gap and I love it.
Firstly the first few months won't be hell on wheels like with the first cos you know so much more about babies now, yes they are all different and there is obviously some adjustment, but you won't freak out about every little noise, every colour of puke or poo, every snuffle, fart etc. You will be more relaxed and the baby will be more relaxed and also compared to toddlers, babies are easy.
What I have loved more than anything and was part of our reason for planning such a small gap was that two days after we got home from hospital it was like Kyle had always been here and Spencer didn't even realise that there had been a time when he hadn't been. Now they play together and I swear already plot against me. Spencer's first words in the morning are "where's bubba".
Hardest things I found were co-ordinating going out. Do I let Spencer walk and take the capsule in or use the double buggy or put Spencer in the umbrella stroller and Kyle in the front pack, but it all works out in the end and you learn how to do things, the same as you learn how to do things when you have one baby.

A smaller gap is fantastic! Kids that close in age usually entertain each other so well. Once your second gets to the crawling/walking stages they will be best buds doing everything together. Trust me, having a live in playmate totally takes a load off you!
I have a friend who is a fantastic solo mum to triplet boys and after watching how well she copes I like to think I could do it too. I having another friend with 2 girls under 4 and twins on the way! I think you'll surprise yourself.
I'm personally counting down the days till we can have our 3 (and final) and to tell the truth I wouldn't mind twins again and let me tell you before having H & E I was never a baby person!
Congrats on your impending arrival chic and all the best!

You will be fine - we had a 3,2 and 1 year old and it was hard but once you get used to it its all good. The first couple of months are hard but even with our older to where there is a 3 year age gap those first months were just as hard. Now our 2 boys 3 & 2 are so close and are best mates theyre always off doin something together.
Just take it one day at a time but honestly after those first couple of monthsit will be great!!

It will be fine, when I had Noah and Lola Sienna was only 18mths so I had 3 under 2!
It was hard at first, but Sienna still got loads of attention and was actually a big help by getting nappies and things, we even taught her how to hold a bottle and feed one of them which she loved.
Now that they are 3 and 20mths it is so awesome to see them playing together and I think this is because of the small age gap.
Good luck chick you will cope!

Those are exactly Issy's first words followed by awwwwwwwwwwww (in that whiney girl tone) if the answer is that he's sleeping)
I'm right in the middle of the "why the hell did i do this?" first six weeks .. and its hard, and im constantly feeling useless because I don't have the time or the arms to get everything done and keep everyone happy!
I'm always feeling like Issy isnt getting her share as Im always feeding, changing or rocking (or watching Issy isnt going to bang the baby on the head with one of her toys as she wants him to play with her lol), however I try to spend some time each day with just her.
I just know (from experience of having one), that it will eventually get easier, and the other posts prove that
Ive found going to bed at night at the same time as the kids helpful, its hard to sleep during the day with a newborn and toddler as their schedules sometimes conflict. Just mysky your night time shows and watch them in the wee small hourd when your feeding

I thought is way tough when I only had 1.
He was 4yrs when DS2 came along & life was full on.
DS2 was 10mths when I found out I was pg with DS3, so life is busy but not really any tougher than with 1.
DS3 went for a sleep AM & PM
DS2 went for a sleep in PM
So I had some me time in the afternoon.
I used to walk DS1 to & from school so the kids would be in the pram & out & about heaps.
I did everything else when I could & made cook in the pot meals often, used the dryer when I had too, & showered at night if I did not get a chance during the day.
The hard work starts when they get older & don't go for sleeps, lol.
You will cope, we always do, we are women, hee hee

haha maybe we should start a group for 2 under 2's. My boy will be 21 months when this baby comes and yes i do wonder what those first few months will be like. It must be so much easier having your second now that you've learned the baby basics, and aren't so worried about getting it 'right'. Thank god my first is so chilled out, that's what i tell myself anyway. And you'll be over the worst of the newborn stuff well before the terrible 2's start.
It's the logistical stuff that i wonder about like, capsule vs front pack vs double stroller.

My boy is 21 months and the little little guy is....... well due 5 days ago. Like so many of you I have often sat there and wondered the hows - and dare I say it whys, especially on the days when B is playing up, or not listening. I know that I have support here, and IRL, and that the first x months are going to be tough, but in the long run it's going to be really rewarding

Thankyou all so much for your positive words
It is nice to know that my concerns aren't as crazy as they seem in my own head.
After my mini meltdowns and weepy post I got on the phone to my mum to tell her the news. She was so happy and super excited about grandbaby #3! Love it how mums make everything ok
I am still a bit concerned about the evenings. DF is a baker and works from 2pm till midnight Mon-Fri. On the positive side he gets lots of quality time with Jaye during the day as apposed to a few hours in the evening before bed. That is definately going to change when Jaye starts school though.
The other, like a few of you, is the logistical side of things. Thankfully Jaye will be walking by then as he is well on his way already. I am not a fan of the double prams and we have a MB already. I figure I will put bubs into a sling when we are out and about? I never used one for Jaye but have always loved how snuggly new babies look in them. Wouldn't even know how to use one I guess it will all come down to a bit of trial and error lol.
Thanks again for letting me rant and freak out

You can do the toddler seat for Jaye that way you don't need to get a new buggy.
That is kinda cool about your hubby's hours. When Jess gets home he ends up only having an hour with the girls each week night before they go to bed At least your man will be on hand to help during the day (when he's not sleeping that is lol)

Congrats!
I'll have 19/20 months between our 2, at first we wanted about 18 months, unfortunately getting pregnant 2nd time round coincided with #1 being in and out of hospital - had I known that was going to happen I would have held off having another one for a while!
thankfully he's not on weekly visits anymore, so we're back in routine. Routine will be your friend.
Also, my DH has been away since pretty much start of April (army) and when he's here it's sporadic so I just don't rely on him. I've made a real effort over the last few months for Jack to become really independent of me, which is hard because he's now a 'big boy' not my baby, but it had to happen at some stage. I've taught him to get his own drink bottle and put it back on the table (on a coaster too lol), put his toys, books etc away, help put the washing on the clothes horse, get nappies - anything really. It's been really empowering for him as he's really matured and will help me when #2 does arrive. Also, it means that I'll be able to sit there feeding the baby and not worry that I've just 'dumped' Jack for the baby, as we've been doing this since he was about 15 months old now.
I'm freaking out about the first wee while because I know I'll be much on my own but what will be will be and it will get easier when they get older

My Dh works shift so every other week he works 2-10pm and i've had to the evening stuff by myself.
I found when Kyle was really little I would just keep Spencer going to bed at 6.45ish as normal and then keep Kyle with me in lounge till we both went to bed, they normally like to cluster feed in the evening anyway. Once he was about 2 months I started getting him to bed around the same time and i would normally put Spencer down first (as he goes to sleep no trouble) and then put Kyle down so I could concentrate on him and any patting or shushing that was needed without a toddler hanging off my leg trying to help!
Now the nights are all sorted and I even bath them together which works out well too, I just take all Kyle's stuff in the bathroom and dry and dress him in there while Spencer has some extra bath time. Then I let Spencer run round the lounge in just a nappy whilst I feed Kyle, I put him to bed at about 6.30pm then put Spencer in his pjs and he goes off to bed.
Plus I find when DH is on afternoons it means he is here in the morning to help me, which is great for being able to get washed and dressed and get out the door to go coffee group or swimming or whatever else we are up to.
I had a front pack but I think a sling would actually have been better. I bought a double mountain buggy but it's kind of a pain in the arse and I've ended up buying a smaller double stroller instead, it's called a marco something or other, you can look it up at www.bubstuff.co.nz, it's very small and totally awesome but the weight only goes up to 15kg per seat.
I have tried putting Kyle in an umbrella stroller and having Spencer walk but he threw a fit cos he wanted to be in the stroller, made for a very embarrassing visit to babycity

Ive found using a double mountain buggy much easier with both kids.
We have a P&T Vibe with a doubles kit, but I find access easier with the mb at the moment, once Elias is bigger and we can put the toddler seat on the back I might use that one more, so at the moment we only use the P&T when we are out with just one kidlet.
Also .. side note, the rain cover doesnt fit with the toddler seat on top .. or maybe I just havent worked out how to do it

Hey I don't have 2 under 2 yet but probably will, but thats not my point, I saw this on trademe the otherday a little pricey, but they are so cool looking. I don't really like the idea of toddler seats so this could be an alternative.
