Topic: When do you test? Posted: 08 August 2009 at 10:19am |
Hey everyone, sorry for the silly question but Im a bit of a newbie at this.
I am now on the day after my period would be due, but it has had a habit of being irregular sometimes.
Im wondering how long to wait before doing a test? Because I know if you do it too soon it might not work.
Thanks for your help!

Hi lisaas101, I tested the day my AF was due cos I was really impatient, and got my BFP on a discover test (they are more sensitive than most of the others). It really depends on when you implanted - for some this happens much quicker than others. Remember that you don't start producing HCg until implantation has occurred. If you are uncertain - maybe wait a couple of days to see if AF arrives (if you are more patient than I was lol), and then test. I'd stay away from Clearblue for at least a week though, as they have the least sensitive poas type.
Good luck!!

Hi Lisa, if your AF is irregular, try a Discovery test. They are more sensitive. Also, if you know when you OVed, you can test at 12DPO, as I just learned this morning.

Radius pharmacy's have them - you can buy them in single packs online (www.radiuspharmacy.co.nz) or if you have one nearby they sell 2 packs - they are more expensive - I think from memory it was $26 for the 2 pack?

Yep from the chemist - not all chemists have them though, just so you know, so you might have to try one or two! And a double pack is approx $25, so pricier than the supermarket ones, but they are great. I tended to splurge on Discover more often than not because they are so reliable.

Well Shezzey, I did 2 PTs this morning. Both have very, very faint lines. DH is due home soon and I'm not sure if I should tell him. I really don't want to get his hopes up if they were just evaporation lines...

Hi there, so I did a test this morning and it came up negative. I used a cheap first response one from the supermarket because I already had one and got impatient.
So Im gutted, however Im not convinced at the same time because Ive been having all these symptoms I don't normally get at AF time eg sore boobs, nauseous all day yesterday and so tired.
Probably just being desperate but do you think I should give a discovery test a try today? Or wait a bit?

It was a dip stick one.
But yeah, I bought a discover test this morning and it came back negative too so pretty gutted :( didn't realise I'd be so upset but it was only our second month so yeah just got to keep going.
I might test again in another week because my cycle has been known to be erratic and had only just come right in the last month or so, and I tested like, the day after I thought it should be due. So I might have got the timing wrong... who knows. I have all these symptoms and no other reason, so frustrating!
Onward and upward I guess

This is my first time here, and I just need to say something.
I know what you are going through. Me and my husband have been trying for 4years, got pregnant after 1year and 7months and miscarried at 11weeks. It was devastating .
In short we have been trying since then. I ovulated this month and was very excited, but i did a pregnancy test and it came back negative. My period is due today but I am still hoping that I am pregnant cuz I have symptoms that I dont usually get before my period.
Did anyone experience something like this? having to wait for a week after your period to test?

The Discover tests are $19 for a double pack at the Lambs Pharmacy on K road.
Lisa I'd keep testing until AF shows!

Thanks everyone for the replies. AF showed up about 4 days after I last posted, which was disappointing but Ive tried my best to get back into a good headspace for this time round. At first I was feeling like I couldn't face doing it all over again and possibly getting a negative, but I figure now I've just got to keep trying and keep positive and not give up. At the end of the day I'm willing to go through whatever I have to to get that positive.
Ive bought some OPKs to use this time around so hopefully that will help even more. Will keep you posted hehe
Good luck to everyone

TTC is such a roller-coaster of emotions isn't it? I got pregnant first time I tried and miscarried at 61/2 weeks - (went to the hospital to get checked and the doctor asked why I was so upset!) Then it took 3 more years of TTC and I don't know how many 5 - 6 week miscarriages to have my first. Now we are trying for number 2 so it all starts again.
I use to get the "symptoms" about a week before AF was due - nausea etc but stopped testing before 5 weeks because I would get false negatives before that. My mum said in her day they didn't know until about 8 weeks so I decided it was best to be patient.
My thoughts are with you, Hope you get a BFP soon
