Topic: When could midwife hear heartbeat? Posted: 04 February 2010 at 1:37pm |
At what stage of pregnancy can a midwife usually hear babies heartbeat?
I'm 10 weeks today and seeing the midwife at 10w4d.
My symptoms have eased off the last two days and after a previous miscarriage I'm quite paranoid. Terrified of getting to the 12 week scan only to find another missed miscarriage.

Ask your midwife to refer you for another scan if you are really worried - 10wk4d is prob too early to hear anything and you don't want to get worried about this as it's such an emotional time anyhow. I'm sure baby is happy and healthy, but having a m/c myself I know how your mind plays crazy games! (I say ask your midwife, as mine referred me when I got crazy at about 10 weeks too!)

I've had 2 scans already - one dating that showed baby was behind where it should be and then one to make sure baby had grown.
I dont think she's likely to refer me for another when my nuchal is coming up in 2 weeks.
I'll try not to obsess
Thanks!

I saw my mw at 11weeks and we didn't hear a hb but heard it the following week at the 12week scan, but the next time I saw her next at 15 weeks we could hear it. MW told me not to worry about not hearing it (of course you worry!!) because bubs is so small they're good at hiding in there!!
If you are worried though, then there is definitely no harm in telling your mw this and asking for a scan just to check everything.
All the best

My MW could hear DS at around 10w - so it is possible! She was surprised, and commented it was quite early to hear it, which made her think that he was further along than we thought - but he arrived on his due date, so I guess he was just noisy even then!

I had my own doppler and heard HB at 10w4days then midwife at 11wks confirmed it was the babies HB I could hear at my next appointment. Apparently it's possible early if you are a slim person. But maybe don't put everything on hearing it or not just bc you can't yet won't mean anything is wrong. Goodluck for this stressful time.

I heard Ollie's hb at 11 weeks, though didn't hear either of the other kids until after 12 weeks.
Good luck, I hope it all goes well

I'll just hold thumbs that she can hear it - it would get me through the next two weeks a bit easier.

With my first my mw didn't even try to listen till 16 weeks and with 2nd (different mw) she listened when I was 12 weeks and a few days but she forewarned me she might not be able to hear it, she did find it though.
Hopefully she does find it for you but try not to stress if she doesn't. (easier said than done I know)

I was 12wks when I heard Isla for the first time although before MW checked to see if she could hear anything, she did say that a lot of people don't hear heartbeat until 15wks so not to worry if nothing came up. Someone I know who is quite a bit larger couldn't hear heartbeat at 12wks and MW told her it was due to the extra layers of fat (which I thought was a bit rough!). Heartbeat showed up at her scan tho.
Try not to worry too much hun! Good luck

I had some bleeding at 10w5d and my MW didnt want to send me for another scan after I had one at 8w for bleeding so I went in and it took about 8 mins (she did warn me it could take a while and she might not find it) but she found the heartbeat and I have LOTS AND LOTS of padding so its possible but sometimes they cant.
