Topic: Pea Pods? Posted: 24 February 2010 at 9:32am |
Has anyone used pea pods? And if so how did you find them?
Also any suggestions on how to go about choosing which type of reusable naps to use? esp when you don't have anyone to try them out on just yet
I have been told it might be a good idea to just buy one of each of a few different types until I know what will fit properly/work for me. Any other advice/tips?

pea pods are a funny nappy in that people seem to either hate them or love them... i never had a problem with them though and they have great inserts.
baby factory stock lots of different types of MCN's now so you can look there. not sure where you are if there are any RL napy stores either.
Oh and the other option is to get a hire kit so you can trial the different types and brands on your baby without the cost.

If you've made the decision to go cloth, get the other things you will need now - a good size nappy bucket (or two - I have one in the bedroom by the change table, and one in the laundry), a wet bag, decide if you want to use cloth wipes or not. Essential oils (store these in a dark cool place - the back of the laundry cupboard is a good place for them).
If you like the idea of pocket nappies, get some hemp and/or bamboo inserts to go with the microfibre insert that comes standard with most nappies.
As well as different nappies to try, get different sorts of liners to try.

tee hee - see its not just napies that are different. its accessories too. I never had a nappy bucket, just a pedal bin in the wash house. i only use tea tree oil but have it for the bath and other stuff too and and have never used liners.

Thanks for the info, hadn't even thought of the accessories yet
Can someone tell me what MCN stands for?
FreeSpirit you mentioned hemp & bamboo inserts, I take it most inserts will fit in most pocket/fitted nappies? Also is this because the bamboo or hemp inserts have a higher absorbancy than the standard microfibre inserts.
Soo much to learn

I have used real nappies. They were great until about 3 months then I found that I had to change them ALOT! Plus I found that you need more covers than you get in their packs as BF poo gets on the covers easily.
I would get a NB pack and see how you go I definatley don't think it's worth buying the birth to potty set.
MCN stands for modern cloth nappy
Hemp and Bamboo tend to lock in moisture and can hold heaps. Microfibre is more like a sponge and you can squeeze out the moisture.
I would get a few different ones and just put money aside for the actual nappies once you know what you want to get, you can always sell ones you don't like. Just remember you definately get what you pay for!

I like Peapods. We used them in conjunction with our Itti Bitti's and never had any issues. Cool nappy I reckon. However, I decided to sell the heap of Peapods I had to get some Large Itti's.
Hate Real Nappies. But I only tried the small a few times on Jude. But it seemed to be too stiff, too wide in the crotch and the elastic left red marks on his back and legs. That was the first of my trial nappies to go.
Baby First ones we found were good as well. Much nicer than the Real Nappy. But again - decided to sell the two I had to get more Itti's.
We did what you are doing - stocked up on a few of each kind before Jude was born and then tried them out. TradeMe is your friend Oh Baby is also your friend - if you see a nappy you think might be good, use the search function to see what others have thought of it and ask again if you want as new people might have different opinions of them.
You don't need to stock up on liners - I'm glad we only got one packet. We don't use them at all. But lots of people do - so you can decide after baby is born.
I reckon it's awesome to see so many people getting into cloth nappies. Not sure why I think that but I still think it's cool.

We have got away with one nappy bin, just a bucket with a lid. chux cloths make great wipes, I have them in a container with a drop of teatree oil and water.

Just be careful if you use tea tree oil. My lil girl is allergic and gets a rash from it! Took me a while to work that out. But I second the chux cloths. I cut them in half and they fit into an iceream container nicely (folded in 4)

me too, I also love pea pods! It think they are great.
With cloth nappies, when i started with them i found the choice bit overwhelming ..
so i tried about 6 different kinds of pockets ...and Peapods are just about fail proog for us. It s just about the baby and the fit i recon.
Some of the brands i didnt fit my daughter at all (eg. never got Babycheeks to work properly, i found them quite narrow, smallich on the front,)also Itti s are quite a low rise, so not so great for tummy sleepers or commando crowlers as they got pushed even lower and leaked on tummy.
But to come to the point, its really trial and error... depending on your preference and baby :-)
Good luck!

I am using Real Nappies on my second baby now and I love them!!! I bought a Birth to Potty pack for my first and there's been no looking back. It is the only true Birth to Potty pack on the market that gives you everything you need including heaps of liners, sanitiser and a swim wrap. I have found them to be comfortable on baby and completely leakproof. What's more they are the most cost effective and practical system on the market. I notice that they are the only system endorsed by a hospital in New Zealand and are now on sale at the supermarket at an even better price and the pack includes an instructional DVD.

Our Nanny used Pea Pods on our son from about 2 months of age and I didn't like them at all. TMI, but I found he got really hot down there because of the fleece, and also if he poo'ed it it didn't absorb the EBF as well as cotton does. I was doing a lot of laundry because the whole nappy needs to be changed each time, and for a work at home Mum it just created more stuff for me to do (on top of everything else!).
My little guy is almost 8 months old and I've been using Real Nappies on him for a few months now, I love them! You have to wash the nappy a couple of times before you use them and then the're fluffy and soft.
I might be a bit paranoid, but I don't like the idea of having polyester directly on my little guy's skin. I find it doesn't breathe as well as cotton so try and stick with nappies that are made of natural material.

I've only got one pea pod but I quite like it. I really like the insert as well. It's so daunting at the start. I didn't want to but unintentially baught 5 different types of nappies and it was a blessing in disguise because I like all of them but find each of them suit different situations best.
