Topic: Solids before BF... Help please... Posted: 10 May 2010 at 10:40am |
Hi There!
Just wondering how other mothers did the transition and what is your typical routine (just to get an idea of what other mums and bubs are doing)?
I'm thinking of starting to do this as she is just on 8 months but am incredibly confused on how to "change" things as she basically ran her own routine with feeds.
Cheers
Me!

No help sorry. I didn't change it till after 9mths and we're still struggling with it.
He's off his solids at the moment which is the opposite of the desired effect.

One thing to bear in mind is, it's just a guideline, and not every baby is going to follow it.
My DD2 is 9 months old and most of the time we still have a breastfeed before her meals as that is just how it works out best. She loves her food and it hasn't caused us any problems at all.

I changed Jackson over at 8 months to solids then BF and so far so good. The only time he gets BF before solids is in the morning. I didnt change his 'routine' in any way, just continued doing everything the same except for eating and feeding. I still follow Feed, play sleep. We dont have a set routine in place but this is usually how our day runs:
4 or 5am - BF then back to bed
7.45am - BF
8.30am - Breakfast
9.30am - Bed
11.30am - 12 - Lunch then BF
1 - 1.30pm - Bed
2.30pm - 3pm - Snack
4pm - BF
5.30 - Dinner with us
6.30 - 7pm - Bath, BF, Bed
I dunno if its correct I just go with the flow, what Jackson demands and my gutt feeling

We got given a suggested routine from the Plunket family centre for babies 8-12 months and it worked out really well for us.
Basically it is:
6am bottle or BF
7am breakfast
8.30am bottle or BF then nap
11.30am-12.00noon lunch
1-1.30pm bottle or BF then nap
4.30-5pm dinner
6pm bath etc
6.30pm bottle or BF
7pm bed
The only issue we had was going from 3 sleeps to 2 - once that was sorted the rest of the routine fell into place. At about 10 months I dropped his morning bottle and he didn't even seem to notice!

I just tried changing Cory over to solids first and he isnt having a bar of it so at 11mths we are still
x4 bottles of 150mls a day and x3 solids and x1 snack.
All babies will do it when they are ready, and the only way to know is to just try it and see what happens.
We knew it wasnt working as for 3 days we have a grizzly, clingy, whingy baby, and as soon as i put him back to his routine everything was great again

I had no problems just swapped then around. We got lucky and the feeding is better with solids first. Routine is very simliar to plunket one above.

Interesting! I was wondering about this. All our feeds (both BF and solids) are quite spread out so i don't think we need to change anything at the moment. Not sure what happens when its time to go from four to three BF a day. Hopefully DS will do this himself!
We are doing:
6.00am - BF
7.15am - Breakfast
8.00-9.30am - Nap
10.00am - BF
11.15am - Lunch
12.00-1.30/2.00pm - Nap
2.00pm - BF
3.30-4.00pm - Nap (sometimes - DS in process of dropping this)
5.00pm - Dinner
6.30pm - BF and Bed!

We are in no set routine. Andrew is as such in charge of when where and how much.
But roughly he breastfeeds in bed just before wake up and then he cuddles for a bit.
he is not really into eating solids first thing and rather prefer like 9 or so. However on Playcentre days I offer before we go but he usually just mess with it. He then eats at 10 at morning tea time.
He had milk afterwards and a short nap (unless at Playcentre where he refuse too much going on)
At 12 he usually eats something with his sister. Milk at 1. Nap then at 3 he munches fruit ect. Then 4 milk (or 5 if he didnt drink at 4) and at 5:30 6 is dinner time but he usually dont eat much dinner. milk at 7 and then he wants some of his food too and then 8:30 he wants milk when he goes to sleep. (although we are getting that done at 8 these days)
Have another 2 to 3 feeds through the night.
Some days he eats huge huge amounts. For instance he will eat Oats porridge and then on top of this eat a banana or 2 weetbix. (kid you not) and other days he would not even have a mouthful of banana.

Rianna- Jackson and Isabella are doing the almost exact same thing except she doesn't get the early morning feed. She insists on starting the day right on 7! Amazing how she wakes up right on 7... (although today it was 8.30!??)
Tigerish- That's cool how your days are spread out, at the moment I feel like I am Boobyfeeding then I put her down and go make her food. So basically I feel like I am feeding all day loooong.... sometimes it's a hassle when we go out.
Smoody- Holy moly! He can eat more than me for breakfast! hahaha
Well, I've tried swapping around the lunch, afternoon tea and dinner before BF and she seems a bit more whingy and then I give her boob and she's fine.... oops I should really give her a tad bit more than before shouldn't I? Breakfast is easier with boob first... plus I can make myself a coffee while I make her breakfast
Sorry off the topic....but since I started doing this her night terrors have begun... I didn't think it would be related but my mum seems to think it is? But then she's old school..... can night terrors really be caused by how they eat??

I just gave her food before bottle, no issues.
In the morning she still has a bottle, then half an hour or so later, her cereal.
We dont really follow a strict routine, and like Smoodys boy, Isabella is in charge.
My girl is a gutso lol, she can eat and eat and eat! but basicly its, with no set time -
up for the day at around 7.30am
milk
breakfast
play
nap
up
lunch
play
milk
nap
etc etc
She sleep through the night, so no night feeds and she has her last meal anywhere between 5 and 7, then shower milk and bed for the night.
works well for us and we did the same for our son :)
