Topic: Anyone recommend a cough syrup? Posted: 05 August 2010 at 1:30pm |
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can recommend a natural-ingredient cough/cold syrup for littlies? I've seen a few advertised, including Clinicials Prospan and Comvita's new Cof-Ex syrup, but am keen to hear from anyone who's tried these (or others) before buying :)

I have never given my kids cough medicine & my oldest is 9yrs. The Dr put me off them & he would never prescribe them to me when I first asked. . I would ring your Dr or heathline for advise first if you have not used them before.

I used "Kiwiherb Organic herbal chest syrup" with my boys.
Its awesome. I Brought it while I was pregnant with number 2 as had a wicked cough and now use it with the boys.
Its perfectly safe for under 2's which is great and it actually appears to work.

Bizzy, I just got it from a Health Food shop but think some chemists stock it too.
I used Comvitas throat lozanges while pregnant and they were great so imagine their cough syrup would be too.

I don't recall, just remember asking for some when the kids were sick & had coughs & my Dr advised against it as they are not good for kids, so we have never used them.

I think its only under 2's that they don't recommend it due to the ingredients used.

Could be & also it was for mr under 6, but I just use Vicks rubs...Not really into to much meds for the kids, but love the multi vits from Centrum.

i never use cough syrup either. dr told me that they do jack all. Then again, my kids get asthma when coughy and a cough syrup wouldn't help that at all

Mt Dr told me they dont do much either, or rather there is no proof that hey actually help, but I know when I use cough mixture it sure does help! So I dont really know why the dr's say that...
Anwyays, the stuff I got for DS when he had a cough(he was a few weeks off 2) is a kids honey mixture one, got it from the chemist and he hated it! So we just used vicks and he drank a lot of water, and had honey off a spoon.

When I was in the States (2 years ago) there was a huge recall on over the counter cough syrup as it was causing kids to stroke. Quite frightening. Not sure what it was but if you do a google search then it will let you know what the ingredient in question was and if the natural ones have it or not. Natural is not always safer. Read the labels.
I was told that coughing is the bodies way of clearing gunk from the chest but not sure of the validity of that. It is sure hard to watch your littlies cough until the throw up though. I do active manuka honey on a teaspoon which is quite good. It just coats the throat and takes a bit of the tickle away.
Don't mean to put you off at all but make sure you read labels.

My dr wouldn't prescribe cough syrup for DS. Not about the ingredients but because suppressing a cough can cause them to choke. Coughing is a mechanism which brings up all the muck from the lungs and suppressing that can be dangerous.
Moist air can help. And I like kiwi's suggestion of a little manuka honey.

We use one called Childrens Respitory Health from a company called InSeason, it has an orange and green label, and Oli loves taking it. Its got peppermint in it so is quite tasty. We find it really helps with his cough and cold symptoms as well!

I gave DS honey to lick off a spoon when he had a really bad cough this year, and also weleda cough elixir 3 times a day. It is all herbal and really helped. You are supposed to put it in warm water and sip but he just had it straight.

Thanks everyone for those ideas - I've also heard that cough suppressants aren't recommended for kids, so really looking for something non-medicated to help ease the congestion - will try the honey, though.
It's the coughing and gagging while they're asleep that really gets me! But my daughter doesn't usually wake up fully during an "attack" anyway so maybe it doesn't actually bother her too much...just hard for us to listen to!

I had to take DS2 to A & M after hrs as he was sick & I asked the Dr about cough meds....& she said the reason they don't recomend for under 6's is because of over doses as in the stats there were lots & it was a big concern. She said it was fine to give like before bed & to sick to he dose & basically any kids cough syrup was fine....

I thought I'd use honey for DD, but she's under 1, so I'm guessing thats a no-no? I've found propping her up helps sometimes, so lately we've been co-sleeping and I lay her perpendicular to me with her head up on my chest. Not ideal, but we've both had wicked colds for 2 months now, and I've got to do something to get both of us some sleep!
