Hi all, I've been a lurker here since 2008 and am about to take the DI path as unfortunately we are at the end of our options with our own swimmers with male factor infertility issues. I am going to see repromed in a couple of weeks but wondered if anyone who has been thru DI IUI could share any thoughts or experiences with me?

Hi Sarahzski,
My DP has MFi so unfortunately the DI process is the only way it can happen for us.
Um.. Im not sure what you want to know??
We have a public system donor of which there were very few - had to have the counselling session and had a read of Building a Family with the assistance of donor Insemination by Ken Daniels

Some of our experiences havent been that flash but I think that depends on the staff....

PM me if you want ...

Hi Rubyrock, thanks for your reply. I guess I will be able to ask all I need to when we have our appointment at repromed. What's foremost on our minds at the moment is to whether we use our friend's kind donation or go completely anonymous. I'm not sure if it's something I can ask - when you use donor swimmers, do you know anything about the donor? Or does the fertility centre chose the donor for you?

We were given info on 4-6 donors which we made our choice from.
It has their age, height, weight, colouring - hair eyes etc
Some details on their parents, nationality, religion, sense of humor, married, children, why they want to be donors ...
Gosh it was a long time ago when we picked ours out - must be over a year now.
I guess in the private sector there should be more donors -very few in the public sector as I guess the focus is more on egg donors.
We went with a public provided donor as we didnt want to wait the 9mths or whatever it was for the sperm to be quarantined (getting old you know!) and the person who we asked wasnt that reliable in the end.

Hi ya
We also have MFI and after doing IVF ICIS which didnt work we decided to go on the donor waiting list, then a friend offered. We talked alot about the pros and cons of both options and decided to go with the person that we knew. We know him and his family, we know what kind of personality he has, what temperment his kids have etc. We are now the proud parents of a 13month old and have just done DI a week ago in the hope of making him a big brother. DF is a fantastic dad and I dont think he could love our son any more than he does. We have talked about it many times and he always says that there is no doubt in his mind that this was the right path to go down. The donor is still a good friend, one of the first at the hospital after his birth, but the friendship hasnt changed.
We are very open about this issue and happy to talk about it to anyone so if you want to pm me and q's you have Ill happly answer them, same goes for your otherhalf, DF would be happy to answer q's from him too.
Good luck

Hi Girls.....

Donor Sperm is now a possible reality for us. DH has MFI (sperm antibodies and dna frag) and we have had multi ivf/icsi/tesa done with bfns

At first the thought of donor sperm made me really upset not wanting to even consider this for us, however we must consider this option if this next cycle which we are about to do with a different clinic this time does not work. We have spend $$$$$ and still no baby.

As my age is now a concern we need to look into donor sperm more seriously.
I would like to know more about this option too.

Where do you start?
Anyone know the current wait list for this?
How many choices you have?
Can you choose say hair colour, eye colour, family history, height, etc etc...
What about legal rights etc? and for your baby when grows up may want to meet their donor?
Overseas donors?

Gosh lots to think about aye!

Hey, sorry your having to look at going down this path.
My story is further up the page.
We decided to use a personal donor, we thought better the devil you know. This way we know not only his hight, hair and eye colour, but also his personality, what his kids are like etc. For us we decided that it was the best option but I know everyone is different.
We are still good friends with the Donor and his family, nothing has changed there.
We are still trying for #2 using the same donor and they are so supportive of everything that we are going through.
DF is the best Dad and I dont think he could be a better dad if DS was genitically his. He says he doesnt even think about it and some times he even forgets.
feel free to PM if you want, we are both very open about the whole process so if your DH has any questions for my DF he will more than happy answer them from the male side of view

thanks heaps Caronz! really appreciate your input here. Yep will most prob think about PM you sometime when have more questions that come to mind.
One I do have now is did you have IUI or IVF with the DI?
I have been told that theirs a waiting list for iui but ivf not really... hmmmm i wonder if thats because they encourage you to spend more $$$$ on ivf to have DI earlier?
I know what you mean about a Donor you know than not... Our ivf journey has been a complete secret and its hard to broach the subject on DI and how do you ask someone to be a DI? hard question aye!

Well, im praying this next ivf/icsi cycle with DH frozen tesa sperm will work for us as we have done quite a few cycles with no luck. If this is no go then DI it will be i would think...

we have used DI/IUI rather than IVF. We did IVF/ICSI with partners sperm and it didnt work, as soon as we put his bits with mine we fell off the bottom of the "average" range so we decided it wasnt worth doing it again.
I got preg with my first DI and now have a lovely 2 year old. I then got preg with second DI but sadly mc, we have now done a further 8 rounds with no sucess. Not wanting to put a damper on things but that is the way it goes.
As far as fertility goes I have a regular cycle and the clinic couldnt find any thing wrong with me apart from being over weight. I responded well to IVF and produced good eggs So we decided to tried the DI and it worked!
I am still over weight and age is playing a factor, 3 years makes a big difference it seams. So if you are all healty in the baby making area Id say try the DI first, its alot easier than IVF

Hi Mtjt, We also chose a known donor so that we knew about medical history, personality, looks and have a very good relationship with the donor. If we were to use an unknown donor, Repromed said the waiting list was 3 years (that was last year).

So we did all the necessary appointments and counselling and had 4 goes at DI/IUI this year. The fourth and final one for us resulting in a positive pregnancy test and I am now 10 weeks pregnant.

We had 2 offers of donors once we put the word out amongst some very good people, we were blown away by the offers in fact and all in all it has been a great decision to go with known DI. Of course there are still days that we wish we could have conceived naturally together, but that positive thoughts of starting a family soon outweighed any negatives in our minds.

Best of luck with your decisions.
