Topic: 2 due dates..which one to go by? Posted: 22 September 2010 at 7:10pm |
According to my LMP I'm due 26th Dec but according to my first scan I'm due 2/1/11 based on bubba's size. I'm just wondering though cos we had a baby on Xmas day last year that maybe this bubs is just small for it's age and that my LMP dates are more correct. We normally go overdue 10 days anyway (as with our 3 children) but if I count 10 days out from the 2nd of Jan that takes us to the 12th and if we count back to the LMP date that's actually 17 days overdue. I'm just a bit worried that I might leave bubs to cook too long in the oven if I go by the scan dates. I know that bubs will come when ready but our girls were induced, which resulted in emergency c-sections both times, whereas with my boy, I waited patiently and had a HBA2C, yet he was 10 days overdue too. I really don't want to be induced. Any advice would be much appreciated.

How far along were you with your first scan? Do you know when you ovulated?
An article I read recently said 8 week scans had a margin of error of 5-7 days (but I've only red the one article that talked about that)and the further on the scan (e.g. 20 weeks), the bigger the margin of error.

I would be inclined to go with the scan if it was 13 weeks or earlier....
You could always get a scan at 41 weeks (with your scan date) to check everything as even if its wrong you will 42 weeks....

Unless you know when you ovulated basing your due date on your LMP assumes that you ovulate on day 14 of your cycle...which is not necessarily that common.
If your scan was done early, as in before 12 weeks I think it's considered to be the more accurate, even taking into consideration the margin of user/operator error when measuring. I'm pretty sure that's the one they use unless you're confident on your ovulation date - such as if you were charting or had IVF etc. The earlier the scan the less genetic influence on the size of the baby therefore most are the same size at the same gestation...
My due date based on my LMP was 09/09/10 and on my scan at 6+2wks was 18/09/10...and I'm still waiting!!

I would go by your scan date as well, and as Melnel said you can get a scan later to check everything is still ok

Aw wow your dates sound like me, LMP put my due 25/12, but scan dates put me at 2/1. Turns out he had to be delivered early anyway so came on the 18/12
I guess you know your body and what it does, so go with what you feel is your 'usual' gestation.

Thanks heaps ladies. I found some literature stating something similar to what Flissty mentioned in terms of dates etc, but it does give me a sense of confidence and trust in my body and bubs if I was to go as overdue as LeeLee. I will take on board the advice you've given me and request a scan at 41 weeks for just in case. As for the ovulating factor, that's a tricky one as I'd only had 2 menstrual cycles after the birth of my son before falling pg again and they were 28 days apart but clearly not regular enough for a more accurate reading. Thanks again everyone

Oh yes and according to my LMP I was 13 weeks when I had my scan but then it came back as being only 12.
