Topic: Starting solids! Posted: 28 August 2006 at 6:42pm |
DS was 4 months old last week and I am thinking of starting him on a bit of baby rice in the next few weeks. He sits up fine in his highchair and enjoys having a bit of a sticky beak around lol. With my 1st son I remember being told 4 months and now my plunket nurse tells me 4 1/2 months to start. Just wondering what you were all told is the best time to start. I know with BF babies they tend to say 6 months, is that still the case? Thanks!!

I have a class at Plunket for Solids next Wednesday, I'll give you the skinny after that on what they recommend. But I do believe that it is still the case that you can wait till 6 months for giving BF'd babies solids. My girlfriend just started her daughter on them at 6 months. I was reading that some kids aren't even ready for solids then and will refuse food till they feel like it.

wether they are breastfed or bottle it is between 4 - 6 months generally. the longer you can hold off on solids tho the better, esp is allergies in the family. and once you start feeding them it is a lot more work. both of mine i started about 5.5 months and even then my youngest wasnt really that keen anyway.

I started both my girls just before 4 months (I was initially told to start anytime from 3-4 months). Apparently babies usually have growth spurts at 3 1/2 and then 4 1/2 months old. At 3 1/2 months they were interested, but only until they finished growth spurting and I found it was best to leave it until the next growth spurt (4 1/2 months). It probably doesn't matter too much, but as a breastfeeder, I was keen to get them sleeping longer through the night.
Just go along with his interest level.

A family history of allergies is a contributing factor is to why I'm going to wait till Olivia is over the 4 month mark, then I'm going to go slow on it.

We were first told start at 4 months, then when Bailey was 3 months we got told to start due to his reflux (thought solids would stop it and make him sleep better) We started at 3 1/2 but it was probably about 4 1/2 before he actually started 'wanting it'
Nowadays my plunket says start closer to 6 months!
ohh yeah Bailey was BF so maybe that is the reason?!?

I had the karitane nurse tell me not to start Rhiannon on solids until she was drinking 5 full bottles a day...
well Rhiannon doesnt drink 5full bottles a day (the karitane nurse was talking about a 200ml bottle)...Rhiannon only drinks 180mls at a time...and ove the past week and a half at about 12pm she has damn near chewed her hand off...so i gave her some solids and she loves it...opening her mouth for the spoon, and keeping her tongue in her mouth....and will then have a 180ml bottle an hour later.
So i say go with what you think is best...as well meaning as plunket etc are...i find they tend to box all babies into one box...and that doesnt work

i started mikey on solids at just over 6 months but my sisters wee one didn't really want solids until he was just over 7 months. they're both breastfed so i don't know whether that has something to do with it or not. my friends baby started at 3 months and loved it, i guess it's all up to the baby really. take your cues from him, when he's ready he'll let you know
