Topic: Is this a bad idea? Posted: 01 September 2006 at 11:16am |
Actually I don't know whay I'm asking since I guess I KNOW it IS a bad idea but anyway...
Maya was sick over the weekend, and when she has a fever I always put her in our bed so I can keep an eye on her during the night.
She's better now, but still playing up about sleeping in Mummy's bed. The night before last I made her sleep in her own bed, but last night I gave in and put her in with me.
It's partly sheer laziness - means I don't have to get up when she drops her Fuzzy Bubba out of bed or wants a drink of water etc. but part of me also just wants to cling to her coz this is the last few weeks when it will ever be just her.
I guess it's from being on our own so long, just Mummy and Maya, that letting Willie back in was a big step, and now having to share her universe with two more little people who will most likely be very demanding, I just want that Mummy and Maya time back.
Which I know is selfish, and making a rod for my own back, but am kind of figuring that by the time I have a few days in hospital and come home she should go back in her bed without any issues... I hope...
Am I being a total idiot?

Not at all Emma. I always worry as to how Zaara will react when I have another bub?? I worry that I wont have enought time with her...and that she will feel left out (which I would make sure she does not...) but these thoughts are normal and for you its harder since you are going to have both your hands full.
I think enjoy this time with Maya...I am sure she is a grown up girl and will behave for mummy when the time comes. I think you have done a great job with her and she will be a great help to you and will be a great older sister to the twins.

Maybe you are, but not anymore than I was!!
I had the exact same feeling about losing that special one on one time with Ella before Benjamin arrived. I completely indulged in every opportunity to snuggle up with her. As she was also sick the week before he arrived there were plenty of opportunities!
I say, even if you feel like it isn't the best idea, go for it. I'm really missing the time with Ella now, and really have to work at doing things just with her when I have the chance.
I've managed to keep up our special bedtime routine, although Daddy is also incorporated into it on occasion, just so she has special time with me at the end of each day at least.
She has the odd night where she cries and wants me or Daddy to go to sleep with her, but we've been firm and she's settled without too much drama.

i totally agree, enjoy this one on one time while you have it! when the twins come it's going to be alot more hectic and tere may not be so much time with just you and maya, especially not while they're little.
i can also understand not wanting to get up all the time for maya when you're so big so to me, it just makes sense for her to be in your bed for a wee while.
i'm sure she'll adjust back without too much hassle.

i know what you mean!!!
after being told x will be 3y 8 mo before she goes to afternoon kindy, i found out this week that she could be going in october this year, and i freaked out at the thought of it. i had reconciled in my mind the thought that we would have the rest of the year together, just her and me doing our thing, until baby arrives, and now i find out that our time together might be halved!
i know she is ready for some more independance, just like i know i am not ready for her to have some more independance!
i think you should make the most of the time you two have left, she will adjust to having the girls here, and you will have lovely memories of precious time together.

I think I would feel exactly the same as you are right now Emma. Especially given it was just you and Maya for such a long time. I say enjoy it chick, and have faith in your little girl that when the time comes she will be a wonderful big sister

I am the same Emma. Now I am at teaching practice I don't get to see the boys as much - so Taine wa in bed with us for a while (or three hours)! Okay, so it may cause problems later, but hey...deal with it.
Can you find something sedatry for now, that JUST you and Maya could do together? like making scrapbook pages, or colouring in, or baking or something and tell her that that will always be special "mum and me" time.

Emma, you aren't being an idiot for feeling that way!
BUT... warning... don't let Maya get used to sleeping in with you.
I did that after coming back from Ashburton (which was over a month ago now) and Hannah still won't sleep in her own bed!!!!! And I don't know how to fix it!!!!
I tried just putting her back in there every five seconds, but because I've got lots of school work coming up, the lack of sleep was driving me round the bend (and after 3 days was still not working). So now I am camping beside her bed to make sure she will sleep in there. It's not fun. and I can't imagine it'd be fun when you are trying to look after two newborns as well!!!!
Maybe Maya will be good about it... but don't underestimate the little monsters.

We had a huge problem with Jake screaming when we put him to bed. We were putting him down and reading him some books. Later we discovered that the reading made him think it was playtime, so now we read in the lounge and then he goes to bed and IMMEDIATELY has lights off. It's much bettre. Maybe you could try something like that Nikki?
Emma, how is Operation Maya going N-E way (look at me being all cool with my txt languagge - troo long at high school methinks)

LOL @ Liz!
Thanks for all your thoughts and ideas ladies.
Well she went back in her own bed last night coz I was feeling particularly grumpy and wanted my own space and slept thru without any probs. She did get up once about 1/2 hour after she went to bed and pretend to throw up so she could go in my bed but after I made it clear that wasn't going to happen she got the message.
I have been spending heaps of time just playing with her tho. Her big thing atm is jigsaw puzzles, they drive me nuts but it is something we can do together. And yesterday she had the Little People out, and then we went thru all her books to find some to 'give' to her baby sisters.
I just feel so sorry for her, she is the best kid in the world and she has had teh grumpiest mother in the world for the past 6 or so months and it's only going to get worse. Willie is spending heaps of time with her too thjo which is good - atm I can hear them playing noughts and crosses on her magna doodle and yesterday we took her to the park - she did get a bit cross when Willie climbed up to the top of the climbing frame - apparently Daddy is too big!

Wow, Maya is good at the whole re-training thing!!!
And just to do a bit of what I do best... thread-jacking... Han isn't a problem to put to bed. (Well... relatively) She goes to sleep pretty well but she wakes up at around 2am and tries to come into my bed. That's when the trouble starts. Argh. So yeah, tried to take door handle off today but apparently they are the most intricately assembled door handles you can get.

Hrmmmm... that's an idea. Last night was ok tho. I wasn't absolutely knackered so managed to wake up when she came pitter-pattering into my room. Only did it three times and went back to sleep each time I put her back. Then came in at 6.30am and I gave in and got up. So yeah, feel positively refreshed!!!
Is Maya still feigning throwing up? Smart kid by the way. Brilliant manipulation tactics. Gotta hate intelligence sometimes! hehehe

Nope, hasn't tried that one again since she didn't get much of a reaction last time.
She did tell her preschool teacher that "Mummy yells at me in the dark time". Gotta love her honesty
